Ok guys, my old Dell Dimension 3000 decided to show it's age. It finally decided to quit.*tear runs down face*

When I start it up it asks if I want to run in safe mode or normal or the last good settings. All choices end up in a blue screen of death. It says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DRIVE. I think I am safe in assuming that this is a run-of-the-mill hard drive failure.

It has/had a 71GB Maxtor Harddrive... not sure if it was PATA or SATA or the exact model. Not even sure what the difference is between the two cables. But it has no floppy drive. So am I safe in assuming that I should get an ATA100 HDD? Also it really has no discernable jumpers. It actually does the weirdest thing I have ever seen in my life. It has two connectors on the mother board and the CD-RW Drive and the HDD both run as master drives from different cables. There is a 120GB Seagate Baracudda for ATA100 on newegg... any issues I might have? Or do you guys think that there are SATA drivers already installed on the motherboard?

Also, I checked the RAM at first and did the number one thing not to do with RAM. I touched the chips(on accident). Needless to say I fried one of my two 256MB sticks. I plan on getting it a GB of Patriot Signature Series for $82.00 or 512MB of Kingston HyperX for about $55.00(I think). Either way... either of these gonna have compatibility issues?

Also... is my Windows XP Home OEM disk from Dell gonna work? because I only bought the serial numbers for Pro for $50 for my other two compies. Don't wanna spend more than I have to. I guess it should work with a Dell mobo?

Estaunsis,Your Dell doesn't have sata so no worries there,I would suggest a Western Digital h/d but any brand name ATA133 drive will do.The jumper should be set to master...as for the way it's cables are connected, that is the correct way.
Your OEM windows disk should work fine providing it has not been used more than allowed by M$. The s/n should be on a sticker affixed to the upper left side of the case use that number.

Best of luck!

OK... question; does the hard drive necessarily have to be ATA133? It's kind of uncommon. In my experiences I haven't noticed a speed difference between the supposedly ATA HDD on my dell and the SATA 3.0GBps on my X2 3800+. So would the slight speed difference between the two ATA drives be crucial or will it not even really matter?(guess I just answered my own question, huh?)

And also, are there any known memory incompatibilities with Dell dimension 3000?

BTW, Thanks for the help, huge relief that I'm not screaming into this blind and butt naked. My Dell is old and slow but I wanna show her some love, ya know?

Esaunsis,
It doesn't have to be ATA133,that was the first thing that came to mind. ATA100 should be fine and you are correct about there not being a noticable difference between the two(ATA100 vs ATA133) unless maybe you were benchmarking them.

As for the memory I could'nt really say. I've used Ocz,Kingston and Corsair pc3200 and have experienced no issues with them. I would say as long as you stick with a reputable manufacturer you should be ok.

I could'nt help but notice you have the same two setups as I (with the exceptions of the m/b's. The computer I am presently working on started it's life as a Dimension 3000. I've replaced the case, motherboard and psu and now have it overclocked to 3.6 ghz. A noticable improvement.

Good luck.B.W.

Ok, Iv'e reseated the RAM over and over. I tells me that I have reduced memory and It has to run with 256MB. This, to me, suggests that I fried one. Of course, I can't even start in safe mode to figure it out. Either way I think I'll go with the gig of Patriot Signature Series. It could use the speed boost.

I am also thinking of retrofitting the case for an AGP compatible motherboard soon and giving it an X700 or invest in a LGA775 Mobo and giving it a P4 520 2.8GHz Prescott with a GeForce 6600. Might make a good birthday gift for my nephew, you think?

Anyway, thanks for the help. Afterdawn rules.

Finally up and running. I use the Dell as an active hardware firewall for my other two rigs and I couldn't find the install disk for the integrated Ethernet. Went to the Wal-Mart and picked up a cheapie for $14.95. Back in business. Without all the Dell extras installed it finally works how it should. Weird but true: instead of a 2.4 Northwood CPU-Z now tells me I have a 2.4GHz Prescott Celey D. Runs much faster now too.

I like the X700 series alot actually. You might have been disappointed but maybe you were expecting too much? An X700XT is a pretty close match for the 6600GT.

What it lacks in power though it more than makes up for in pure picture quality. This makes it a prime candidate for budget Half-Life 2 machines. I have also seen it run FarCry surprisingly well.

Nvidia cards tend to show lighting as a more candy-like color and are a little too intense for me. ATi cards show light as a more natural glow and tend to have better bang-for-the-buck which makes them my choice.
