Can anyone give me a solution as to why my HP dvd740b DVD burner all of a suddon wont burn faster than 4X? Rarely itll jump to 8X maybe even 10-11X but its hit or miss. Im using the same disks that iv been using for months. Iv'e been copying a dvd with dvd decryptor, Nero 6 and 7, and DVDXCOPY. Iv also tried using a friends disks (Imation 16X) and those seem to work worse. I have recently updated the firmware for the burner, and it helped some. i get a true 4X instead of teetering on 1.8X burning. Please help. Thanx in advance.

i also have that burner its a good burner but your not gonna get any good speads out of it. its not that good durning at the high rate aof speed i have tried mine and found that at the 12x and 16x speed you get coasters.you said you have the latest furmware update? it is hj24.if you slow your burns down to 6x which i have done with some great success you should be ok.... and as far as not being able to get higher speeds what speed disc are you useing?16x 8x????? and what type of disc i wouldnt try useing those imation16x. not the best quality disc.... i only use verbatim16x+r and just resently sony8 MIJ(which or Taiyo Yunden) which are the best...... you can find them just about anywhere but must be MIJ(made in japan).... i hope this helps you some

I guess it helps some. I want to know why all of a suddon one day it decides not to burn faster than 4X. i put in a 8X fuji disk i have and it says its at most a 4X when 2 months ago i had no problem getting 8. Any recomendations on a better burner? i had a Micro advantage for a year but then it crapped out on me by only burning 1/2 disks. as for mine occationally getting above 10X, I tested the disk and they work perfectly fine.

as faras not burning faster all of a sudden im not sure. i have a few friends tell me these hp burners arent actually the best to do alo0t of burning with ...im working on about 250 burns now so i guess my number is about up...as far as agood burner the guys here at afterdawn are partial to the plextor burners 716a which i have just found out they arent makeing anymore,theplextor755 is the next inline supose to be a great burner i was eyeing it myself until i have found the 716 at my local microcenter for $65.. they also like the benq burners id say its a 50-50 split here over those 2 brands...

your system might have gone into PIO mode instead of keeping DMA on! you disks might have had a reading or writing error and slipped your drive into PIO, which will slow down your burning speeds. It's worth looking into:

http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues

follow this guide and see if it happened! If so fix it by following it's directions.

also here is a media guide for you:

http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues

it will indicate what disks are good and what aren't so hot. you can also look up DVD media and codes here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431

you can look up and inspect your media using many programs such as:

DVDDecrypter
Nero Infotool
DVDInfo Pro
DVDIdentifier
and many many other programs, some free and some not free.

the best rule of thumb is Made In Japan disks are the best...... only exception is Verbatim (they are made in Taiwan/Singapore).

If your burner is up to date with it's firmware then it should recognize the disks that are out there. Some disks work better than others for your drive but if you use top notch media it should work just fine. Keep DMA on and the speed of your burns to half the rated speed of the disk and you'll do fine. good luck.

I appreciate all the help. unfortunatly my drive is still in DMA. o im going to have to assume that its my disks/drive and deal with it until it finally craps out like my micro advantage did. But thanks for you help again and ill have to try to find some better disks.

make sure u use the correct disks

i always go for ones with the 'RITEK G05' dye, i have heard from many people that these are very good for quality and the price of them is very decent!!

i have never had any problems, also something else that can wear away at ur DVD-RW drive is use other than burning, try to minimise the amount that u use this drive for reading, dont use this drive for just reading disks, i can reduce the life of this drive for about 1-3 years in some cases.

hope this helps

here is a media guide for you:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

use this free software to find out the manufacturers ID, then you can see if you have RITEK G05... I only use Taiyo Yuden!
