@rick5446

If you have paid for a higher price to get the retail version, then you should definitely contact them.Of course you won't get any software if it's an OEM version. But do they mention the "retail" version for the Benq drive on their site?I think that even if it's suppposed to be a retail version but happen to them that it's no more available and have only the OEM versions left, they should have reimbursed you the difference or at least and first thing, inform you before they ship the product.Because as you said, you're looking for that reatil one especially. Now if you're going to return them, check if the shipping charge will be yours or they will accept to pay for all the charges.

I'll chime is as a satisfied DW1650 owner as well. Great drive and inexpensive. Like Doc says, best bang for the buck. Cheers.

Hello everybody..Quick question this booktyping is this a 1 time shot on a DVD or do U have to do it everytime.I'm useing ImgBurn & have to do a slow thorough Format, which takes about 30mins. HOLY COWABUNGA I hope not each time

rick5446:

Try the free program called qsuite to do all the booktyping. Once you set your media to dvd-rom,then no more worrying.

http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

IMGburn is very close to dvd decrypter's burn engine. Once you set it to dvd-rom,it should stay. Not sure about the 1655,but the Benq 1620/1640/and 1650 will stay at dvd-rom,after you set it.I'm not sure what you mean by Slow-Through format.

I like the Nero oem discs. My 1650 came with Nero 6.6.0.14 and gave me an extra lightscribe labeling program,recode2, and full use of nero's disc quality scan. I also use Nero to autoburn with DVD Shrink for a very simple backup process. The extra oem discs I amass,I give away to buddies.

Movies27: You won't regret it if you buy a benq

I can't even wear out my original 1620.
Haven't found an MID coded media they don't recognize.
99.9% + success rate.
After booktyping:95% and above stand alone compatability rate.
Burns everything I slap in them
Frequent firmware updates
On the Fly-no problemo for me
Fantastic DL backups
Best bang for the Buck!

The Benqs do highly favor the plus format. They'll burn both, but my dash format backups do have a lower compatability rate on stand alone players and other dvd drives.

I had trouble erasing +rw discs a year ago. I had to use my spare pc-with another benq, to do the erasing.

My issue was with Nero. The only issue I ever had.
I had to uninstall it,run Nero cleantool6,and downloaded the same Nero oem 6.0.0.21 disc and issue was solved.

Dvdinfopro should erase it also.

What program/s you using to try to erase it?

quick erase or full erase?

I don't do too many rw's anymore.

I'd do 4-5 quick erases,then a full erase-per DVD-RW disc.

I also do very little data discs.Mainly original dvd backups. All my important data is small enough to fit a standard cd-with a lot of extra room left.

saugmon..I D/L a lot [AVI'S] of series & store them temp on RW's to watch..After I've got them all I put them on a perm DVD.I've got a DivX dvd player,& this way i can store 12 1hr eps on 1 disc
As far AS RW'S go I just let Nero overwrite for about 10 rw's then do a full format to bring disc back to near new.been working great for me had the same 50rw's for about 3yrs,except my new 4x ritek-rw's

Just installed my benq 1650 & burning a movie i noticed in DVD Shrink i could check the "booktype dvd-rom" thingy...i thought i was going to have the qsuite in order to do that but maybe i will need for when burning in Nero or using clonedvd2 as i hear that clone dvdv will not booktype by itself???

@Saugmon: The 1655 settings stay at DVD-ROM, once set. Just a heads up for you and others who wonder.

If you can't get QSuite to work, dl DVDInfo Pro, that will allow you to booktype with the BenQ, it is a set it and forget it. Download the free version it will work.

http://www.dvd-recordable.org/wwwimgs/media/flash/dvdinfopro/index.htm

Only problem with the free version is that it expires every now and then and you will have to dl it again and install.

DVD Decrypter doesn't tell me if my backups been booktyped.Same with Nero infotool. Dvdinfopro and dvdidentifier will:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

Every now and then,a benq 1650 will not booktype-out of the box. Q-suite will take care of that. Identify a couple of your plus backups in dvdidentifier-it's free. It'll tell you just like this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RITEK-P16-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Media Type ID : [P16]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notice disc and booktype: If not booktyped, they'll both say DVD+R.

Decrypter does tell you if the disk is booktyped, this is Kk done on Fuji disk and booktyped. Just checked it in iso read and the disk info comes up.

Also the Nero CD DVD Speed will give you the disk info, but not Nero Info Tool

I don't know, all mine show up as being booktyped. If DVDInfo is reporting it as being booktyped then it is.

@movies27

My DVD Decrypter looks slightly different than arniebears, there are actually two sections in the information screen on the right. The top one will show the physical characteristics of the disc, but if you scroll down to the last section (should be labelled Last Recorded as shown in arniebears pic) it should say DVD-ROM.

EDIT:

BTW, just installed my 1655 and I'm rescanning a couple of old discs. Can't wait to make a couple of burns and see what this puppy will do.

BENQ DVD LS DW1655
Driver Version 5.1.2535.0

On a Verbatim +8x,+16x,Ritek -8x
USED Read Buffer...Stable at 100%
Buffer Level-Drops to 24%-34% occasionaly[every 4th,5th disc],but seem to float between 94%&75%[drop].This kinda worries me,as it might
make for a weak Burn
My old NEC would do this & would make for a weak burn where the Buffer Levels dropped.
This would cause a slight freeze frame or Blocking before continueing the movie In my DVD Player.
My old P lextor PX708A holds USED Read Buffer...Stable at 100%
Buffer Level..Stable at 98%
Is this usual for the BenQ's,can this be corrected
