So I got a 80 g off a freind of mine and I want to put it in my PC as a Slave. Cmos reads it and I pretty sure its functioning, but when I try to boot xp it goes to the screen where the bar goes across and it stays there for awhile and then it restarts all over again. Ive been told I have to reinstall windows to get this to work. Well Thanks in advance.

Hi, make sure you are booting from the c drive and not the new one.

did you make sure to set the jumper on your slave to slave and on the master to master? cable select doesn't always work.

reinstalling windows might do it, but that's really a last resort. without the drive, everything functions perfectly, right? it's just when you add it you have these problems? you said you set the jumpers correctly, but are you putting the drives on the correct places on the IDE cables? what's your power supply rated at? any loose connections or compie parts touching what they shouldn't?

I've also seen a bad hard drive cause the same problem...even if the o/s is'nt on that drive,I'm saying this not only from experience but because it's been stated, that it worked fine until you installed the slave drive.

You should not have to re-install windows, your o/s remains unchanged, you should simply be able to install the 2nd drive as slave and format it from within windows.
You may also want to replace the ide cable if possible...just incase.

Just some things to consider.

Good luck.
