I have burned a ps2 game image using Alcohol 120% and I am not able to burn the image to a 4.7gb DVD-R. i dont want to put a mod chip into my ps2, so if i get a swap magic do i also need to get a flip top cover or can the swap magic be enough to play the game. Which program is better to read and write images: Alcohol 120 or dvd decryptor?

I always use DVD Decrypter for DVD games... Alcohol 120% can cause problem to some people's computers, but it's what I use for CD based games. There's a link to a tut in my sig. if you want to have a look at how to use this.

What version is your PS2? If you have the old PS2 you'll need slidecard or flip top, if you have the slim PS2 you'll need magic key (or whatever they are called... have a look on http://www.swapmagic3.com/)

i have the older ps2 system. i just finished reading a ps2 game image by using dvd decryptor and i burned the image to my DVD-R by using the Alcohol 120%. I saw a website that sells swap magic programs and a slide card. is it okay to use this or do i have to use the flip-cover? i dont want to open up my ps2 and mess something up.

Why use alcohol to write the image when you allready have DVD Decrypter open? Mode>ISO write. Yes you can use the slide card.

yeah I agree with what kiwi1 said - there's no reason to use two programs when one is sufficient. Also slidecard only works with the old PS2, which I assume is what you have?
