Hi,

I am new to the PS2 soft modding scene and recently got Swap Magic with the slide tool, but none of my PS2 backup games will work. I am using the following:

Media: Verbatim DVD+R
Drive: Philips DVDRW8631
PS2: v4
Swap Magic: v3.6 + Slide Tool
Software: Nero / DVD Decrypter
Burn Speed: 4x, 8x, 16x

I have tried all suggestions in the 'checklist' topic also.
I have used both Nero and DVD Decrypter with varying speeds to burn, no luck with either. They seem to freeze at varying points, not the program but the actual burning process.
When I have successfully burnt a game, I just get a black screen after the swap process. I got clicking once and then 'This is not a valid PS2 disk'. I figured this message was related to the quality of the media but since they are Verbatim, they should be OK judging from what I have read.
So my only other thought was it was my DVD drive, which I have read about and appears to be problematic for people in general.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can solve any of these problems? (preferably without buying a new DVD drive!)
Or with all this trouble would I be better off going the HDLoader route for my backups?
Any help is greatly appreciate, I am at my wits end!

i have a few
1. get 8X DVD-R and not +R as the V4 and below have been known not to play +R media
The Verbatim brand should be fine
2. if that doesn't work check for updated firmware on the net.
3. skip Nero and just use DVD Decrypter. It works much better for games.
4. make sure you look in the posts here for the game name, if it is a game that needs rebuilding it willnot work no matter how you burn it until you rebuild it.
5. just for kicks clean the laser, read up on how to do this and be CAREFUL when you take off the top as the power/eject ribbon can come out very easily.

But start with step 1 and try DVD-R first. Get 8X and burn them at 4X

wont do any harm in trying to booktype one of those DVD+R to dvd-rom either
see if your burner is supported by DVD Decrypter
(click on the book icon on the bottom right hand side of DVD Decrypter)

Well, I'm glad you read my checklist thread.. it had a part in there about firmware too, so that should be ok as you've tried everything.

The only other thing I can think of is the discs themselves as the others have mentioned.. sorry I didn't mention DVD-R in my checklist thread, but some people have good luck with DVD+R too.. you just might be one of the unlucky ones that only DVD-R will work for you. Also, you might want to get 8x max discs, 16x is overkill really.. and then burn half the max speed (4) and you should be ok hopefully.. other than that, rebuilding seems to be the only other explanation for your problem.

I will update my checklist guide in the next few days to make it a bit easier to understand.. in the meantime there are loads more good guides in my sig links below.. good luck

Many thanks for all your suggestions, I will be trying all of them in my desperate attempt to sort it out.
And your checklist thread is brilliant paddymail, a great resource for newbie's like myself.

hursty your suggestion about booktyping didn't fix it for me i'm afraid. DVD Decrypter doesn't appear to support my burner fully either, could've saved myself a few coasters if i'd looked into that properly.
I will be trying out all the other suggestions tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your help.

No worries :)

Try this method (one which I use)

1. use DVD Decrypter to get the ISO file to hard drive.
2. Use Nero in "burn image to disc" mode and burn at 4x.

What games are they you're trying to backup by the way? you may have just been unlucky and picked several that need rebuilding.

When you say you get the "not a valid ps2 disc" error.. is that from inside swap magics boot screen?

Are you sure you're suign the slidecard correctly? try using swap magic and then swapping in an original game instead of a bcakup and see if that works.. then at least we'll know if you're doing the swap correctly, thanks.

Well I tried DVD-R [sony, but since that's still first class i assumed that would be ok], burnt two different games at 4x, both games give me a clicking sound, and just sit at a blank screen without loading anything from the burnt disk.

I tried your suggestion of swapping in an original game and that worked fine, so I assume it's not me doing the swap process incorrectly. Previously when i was getting the 'not a valid PS2 disk' error message this was from inside swap magic's boot screen (if this makes any difference or gives any clues to my problem)

From another thread on here the general opinion seems to be that this clicking is a laser problem. I'd be reluctant to do this for fear of buggering the thing up, would going the HDLoader route solve this clicking error or would the same thing occur?

Well, it could still be the media. What is the ID of those discs? some sony discs are complete crap.. you can't really go by brand name, even some verbatims are crap too. Which coiuntry do you live in and I might be able to give yuou some suggestions on what discs to buy? That'd be your best course of action at the moment instead of looking for the problem somewhere else I think.
Again, what games are they you're trying to backup? this could make a major difference to whether it would work anyway.

My Sony disks have ID SONY16D1 (which is first class media).
So far the games I have tried are:
Fight Night Round 3
Fifa Street 2
Winning Eleven 10

I did not personally back these up, I got them from decent sources and they have worked for many people.
I am from the UK so if you have any suggestions of where to get disks from that would be great. The cheaper the better at the mo as well since i've spent the best part of 30 quid so far trying to get this to work.

Thanks again for your continued help, it's much appreciated.

Ok, I believe at least 2 of the 3 games you mentioned need to be rebuilt or patched to work with swap magic.. I don't know where you got the game ISO's from, but myabe that could be one reason why these aren't working for you.

I'm also from the UK and get ALL my media from http://www.svp.co.uk/index.php

They are very good there.

I especially recommend the:-

taiyo yuden http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=228

or

ritek G05 http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=219

I personally use the ritek for most of my backups, either films/data or ps2.. and they work great on everything I've tried them in.

Try backing up the discs yourself to see how you get on.
