So, I've spent the last few hours reading all the threads, so I think I have a pretty good handle, but I wanted to ask a few questions that I didn't see answered.
The game I'm trying to burn is Naruto: Narultimate Hero 3, and import. I have the ISO already made, and I'm 95% sure there are no problems with it.
My ps2 is a version .4(+) so DVD+Rs shouldn't be a problem. The DVD+R I'm using right now is Memorex, with a speed of up to X16. I read that the PS2 can only read 4x-8x discs, so does that mean I have to get something that's either 4x-8x, and not 'up to' or should I be able to burn it at 8x since it IS an 'up to'? I'm using Swap Magic 3.3 as well. I know that memorex isn't really recommended, but honestly I'm a bit more confused at buying a nice Verbatim or any of the other ones since it's apparently impossible to tell whether or not you're buying the good version. Ahem, so on to the questions.
My firmware is updated, the .dll from Nero is in the system 32 file, and everything else in the troubleshooting thread is done, so I'm led to believe the problem is the DVD media, unless someone thinks otherwise. So I want to know what the difference is between a flat 16x and an 'up to 16x'. Also, is there anyway I can buy a nice quality DVD+R 8x locally? There's a Home Depot, Fry's, and Best Buy around here, so I'm mainly asking if there's anyway I can buy them without going online.
Sorry if I'm not terribly coherent, I've been working on this thing and reading threads for hours, so my head's starting to spin.

You need to ditch the memorex before we can even attempt to troubleshoot your problem. If you goto home depot, frys, etc and buy verbatim, they will be legit. Also, trying a different game might help (I think people have problems with that one).

Kay, I'll definitely ditch the Memorex. I'll try a Fry's tomorrow to look for the 8x DVD+R.
As for the game itself, well...my other friends can get it to work. I'll keep going at it.

also, i would use -r discs. Only some v4's read +r discs.

Right, I noted that before I left. I couldn't find any at the local store though, so I'm going to try somewhere else tomorrow. Before I do though, I need to know whether or not I can take a DVD-R that goes up to 16x and just burn it at 8x(or 4x, whichever is better) or whether I have to get one that's just 8x. On that same note, would it matter if I got one that goes up to 8x? The impression I got was that it should either be burned at 8x or 4x, depending on the max.

memorex sucks , if youre gonna use the your gonna have to burn at 2x on memorex, i have some games burned at 2x , and they work fine, if you burn in memorex at 4x or more, they dont work well, or at least thats what happens to me

To answer your question Tarranon, 16x discs of any brand arent recomended, They dont seem to be very consistent and cause problems for alot of people. For me personally, I have never had a prob with top qaulity 8x discs burned at 4x. Have a look here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303681

Yep totally agree... ditch the memorex, even if you get them to work they might stop working after a while and could maybe harm your laser too. As sly said, try a differetn game first, the main problem some people have is that they try some games that need rebuilding etc before just trying a straight read/write disc.. list the games you have got and we'll try to tell you what would be a good one to start with that should be straightforward.
Don't bother with 16x discs, get the 8x DVD-R, they should be cheaper and it's all you need.. then when it comes to burning your games set the speed at 4x... by the way, ALL discs when we mention things like 8x verbatim, we are referring to the MAX burning speed of the disc.
I'm glad you took the time to read up a bit before attempting your backups.. some people don't do that at all, and then wonder why they've run into so many problems.. yours should be pretty easy to fix with maybe just better media.
Glad you liked my "checklist" thread... did you follow all the tweaks in there? like updating your firmware etc too?
Ok, well get back to us when you have some better media and tell us what games you have - and we'll suggest a good one to start with.

I grabbed the TDK(Taiwan) DVD-R 8x discs, and it's working like a charm now. I'll keep an eye on it to see whether or not quality stays the same. Thanks for all your help guys, and yeah paddy I had followed all your instructions, so they weren't the problem, but I'm sure they'll come in handy for the future. It also gave me an excuse to get off my lazy butt and update the firmware :P

Open up DVD Decrypter and insert one of those taiwanese TDK's and look for the I.D code that comes up in the info, if you see CMC MAG anywhere then throw them away imediately lol.

Okay, scratch that. It doesn't work after the first time you play it. It's already skipping, and it froze. I am seriously miffed. Is there anyway at all you can check while you're at the store? Or are there any brands you can specifically look for in particular so that you're not gambling on whether or not it's a fake? I noticed it had Sony and Maxell. Are they fairly safe bets?

If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Maxell High Grade (DVD+R's). The PS2 laser is picky, these are the only three types of media you should trust for maximum reliability and compatibility with your PS2. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.

Okay, great, now I'm getting mixed signals.

TYG02 = This was faked by INFOSMART (Hong Kong) in 2004-2005. Some OPTODISC media was also reported to carry this code. Mitsui is also faking them in their USA and Europe plants. The fakes are rumored to be for "improved 8x media detection" but low quality media is low quality, regardless of the media ID.

Right, I had that site bookmarked. I missed the buying locally site though. Thanks for digging that out for me.
So, just to make sure I understand, you're always gambling whenever you buy these things, right? As in, there's always a chance that you might have gotten one of the 'legitimate' fakes?
