Hello.

Is this a WinXP operating system message or a Nero message? What program are you using when this message appears? You need to write down exactly what the message says and which program is generating it. Are we talking about video resolution settings or what?

it is a Windows message. resolution settings. i cannot get the message now so therefore i cannot get the exact text of the message.

I purchased WinDVD since I posted the question and now WinDVD works but Windows media player just has a blank(black) screen in the area that is supposed to contain video. maybe WinDVD does not allow other programs to use its decoder?

i think i may have had a faulty dvd decoder.

Hello again.

Maybe your codec is corrupted. Here's a free pack of them:

I downloaded the free files. This dvd thing is new to me so i would like to ask some questions.

Is codec the same thing as a dvd decoder?????

where in Windows setup can I select which dvd player to use? sometimes it will ask before the dvd plays but most of the time it just uses the last one i used.

I have the player I just downloaded and I have windows media player and WinDVD.

Is it better to use a DVI output from my video card or the regular vga???

If you get audio but not video in WMP, it sounds like a bad video codec. You might try uninstalling WMP and then reinstalling it.

If you want to set an association so that the same program always opens a particular type of file like a DVD movie, do the following:

Place the DVD in the drive.
Go to My Computer and right click on the DVD icon and select Properties.
Click the AutoPlay tab.
Choose DVD Movie from the menu.
Click the Select an action to perform radio button.
Select the program to use from the list displayed.
Click the Apply button and then the OK button.

Most of the time DVI is preferable to VGA. VGA is an analog signal so digital has to be converted to analog and sent to the monitor. DVI is a pure digital signal. No conversion is necessary. In days past, there was a considerable difference in quality between them, not so much these days, except in some special cases.

Codecs (COder-DECoder) are small programs that encode and decode audio and video streams.
