Hi everyone. I was browsing, a few of the tutorials scattered across this thread, on how to do things like install games on your hdd. I have a ps2 hdd, and hd advance, I have a few concerns. One being, I understand that to transfer games from your pc to ps2 you have to manually connect your ps2 hdd to your pc, this is a method im worried about most. I have winhiip, but I have no previous experience in opening a pc case, and I was worried that I'd mess something up and end up having a non workin pc, which right now i CANNOT afford. I really want to get this game on my hdd though. Is there like an easy method of connecting your hdd to your pc? Could someone like walk me through it? I just want nothing more than to get this game on my hdd without damaging my pc permanently. Also one last concern is, I still plan on playing Final Fantasy XI with this hdd, will reformatting it to use with hd advance conflict with this at all? Or should I just use it for one and not the other. Thanks in advance, I SERIOUSLY need help with this.

You could buy a USB enclosure and connect the HDD to your PC that way, but that's usually only the preferred method if you have a laptop - IDE is much faster compared to USB.

Alternatively you could transfer the game via ethernet using HDL Dump, though it'll take about an hour to transfer one game, you can find this program in http://www.sksapps.com/

I personally think it's pretty hard to mess up a PC by opening it and connecting a HDD to it - unless you accidentally break something or short something, it's not gonna break that easily

Ok I opened up my case just for the heck of it, I figured it wouldnt hurt to look inside. What exactly are the IDE cables, and from which end do I unhook them? If I could figure that out, then maybe I could be able to pull this off.

@vergil521
First of all no double posting - please read the forum rules on this.

not sure how FFXI works so I can't say for sure, but at a guess probably not.

IDE cables are the one that's connected to your current HDD in the computer, unless your HDD uses SATA, there should be a cable with three connectors in total connected to the HDD, one to the motherboard, another to the HDD, leaving one free. You can connect your PS2 HDD to that

@mandarps2
Unless you have a modchip you can't do that.

And no posting email address here, remove it before the mods do please

Yeah Im not sure if theres any free ones. I believe I saw one connected to like the floppy drive and things. Which one do I pull out and whats the safest way to put it out? I just need to get passed this, and I'll be all set, I just dont want to permanently mess anything up. I'll only need to do this once.

No the one connected to the floppy isn't the one you are after... could you take a picture of the cables you can see in there? There should be different cables connected to the optical drive, floppy, HDD etc, a pic of all three would be nice, then I'd be able to tell you which one you are after

The image is a bit hard to see, but looking at image above, I'm guessing you have your DVD drive at the top, floppy beneath it, and the vertical one is the HDD?

If that's the case, unplug your DVD Drive and connect that to the PS2 HDD and it should work. Also you'll want to check the jumper setting on your PS2 HDD - make sure it's set to slave or cable select (there should be a diagram on the HDD that tells you which one you set it to to make it slave or cable select)

And no offense but sounds like you are not familiar with the PC terms so if I'm going too fast then let me know and I'll try to slow down a bit :)

Yeah its DVD Drive, CD Rom Drive, then Floppy. And its ok I take no offense at all, Im familiar with basic pc terms and some above it, but when it comes to the in depth stuff Im clueless. As for what you said you lost me at jumper and that was it, I got everything else. Now my final questions, and then im gonna go for this. You said unplug it from the dvd drive right? Do you just pull it out? Whats the safest way? and once its out and connected to my hdd, do i put the pc case back on, and plug everything back up?

If you look at the connector side of the HDD, in between the IDE (ribbon cable) and the power plugs, there should be some pin like stuff, and possibly a black thing that goes across two pins, and if you look at the top of the HDD there should be a chart telling you what to connect if you want it to be a master, slave or cable select. Actually what brand/model is your HDD? It may be easier to explain if I can dig out some stuff from the net if I know which one it is.

Yeah just unplug it (make sure the power is off and to be safe, I unplug the power cord at the back) and plug in your HDD. I usually leave my case open when I do this cos I'm too lazy to put it back and then take it all apart again, and I mean this is a 15-20 minute process so no harm in leaving it open
