I have just purchased this movie and noticed while backing up a single copy for travel, that this SONY Arccoss encrypted movie is DVD labeled as "ROOT:)"? (as seen below). Though I had no problems backing up this movie using AnyDVD BETA 6.0.2.1 in the backround and Nero Recode2. The use of this "ROOT" DVD label did get my attention seeing that the word "root" does not make for an abreviation of this movies actual title or as some sort of title acronym. But is a word associate with a well known virus that SONY encrypted to some of it's music titles. Hmmmmm?
Summary for drive F: (AnyDVD 6.0.2.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1
Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 2084960 sectors (4072 MBytes)
Total size: 4169920 sectors (8144 MBytes)
Video DVD (or CD) label: ROOT
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!
RCE protection not found.
Found & removed wrong DVD structure!
Found & removed structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock)!
Found & removed bogus title set!
Found & removed invalid VOBUs!
Changed firstplay: Jump directly to Title 1!
Found & removed Autorun from Video DVD!
Found & removed 5 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!
AnyDVD does mention in it's new BETA versions history that one of the needs for the BETA release or update was because of it's new added support with SONY Arccos protected DVD's. Basic Instinct 2 along with the use of the obvious DVD label used on this DVD may be a reason to update to the BETA version. In other words I don't know how simple or even how possible it would have been for me to back this title up if I were not using the AnyDVD BETA version to do so. Until someone here knows better this is just a heads up with words of caution.:P
6.0.2.1, 2006 06 29
- New: Added support for new versions of the Sony Arccos protection
to the option to remove "Protection based on unreadable Sectors"
- New: Support for Windows Vista UAC
- Change: Individual drive settings window is shown after global settings
change in setup dialog and after wake up from S3 power saving
- Fix: AnyDVD did not always request a required reboot after setup
- Updated languages

well here is another program that will do the job: RipIt4Me .... it's free and if you install FixVTS, DVDDecrypter and Shrink this program will rip any movie to the hard drive, take out all the encryptions and have it ready for Shrink to process ALL FOR FREEEEEEE! oh..... and here is a guide by my good friend Arniebear:

i backed up this movie with DVD Shrink and dvd region +css free running in the backround no problems, with the thing with root showing in the title of any dvd, i rember seeing something just like that on another dvd as far as being labeled wrong, stars wars 3 the title when you went to backup in shrink said charloett, also in shrink with basic instinct 2 it said root so don't know why it did that but the movie came out just fine

by me, Basic Instinct 2 doesn't come out till Tuesday. In any case.... if I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD I can change the label to what ever I want to. And I'm more than sure that this combo will do the job for that movie!

It may be short for Sony Rootkit which is a nasty virus that limits the amounts of copies one can make of mp3s. Here's a definition I found on the web.
When a listener puts the album into a computer's CD drive, it pops up a license agreement. If the listener accepts, it installs the copy protection rootkit onto the hard drive. The rootkit element of the software is used to hide virtually all traces of the copy protection software's presence on a PC, so that an ordinary computer user would have no way to find it. The software acts to limit the number of copies that can be made of the CD and prevents a computer user from making unprotected MP3s from the music.
Installing AnyDVD will eliminate Sony Rootkit

@taylor........ we are not talking about CDs and MP3s..... this is a DVD movie and there is no Quote: license agreement
that pops up when you insert the DVD in the computer. sooooooooo your Sony Rootkit does not apply here.

I was under the impression that it wass font to be unlawful for Sony to use the rootkits, due to it violating privacey laws, and that they be forced to release a patch to fix the infected PCs (which, actually left the PCs more exposed since the fix was screwed up).
My point being, that Sony can't release anything with rootkits anymore.
When evolution selects its agents, it does so at a cost, makes demands in exchange for singularity, and you may be asked to do something against your very nature. This force, evolution, is not sentimental. Like the Earth itself, it knows only the hard facts of life's struggle with death. All you can do is hope and trust that when you have served its needs faithfully, there may still remain some glimmer of the life you once knew.
