Hey everyone,
Ive got a question, I coudlnt find another thread with the same problem, so I hope Im not reposting. I ripped the Madonna Drown World Tour DVD using Smart Ripper, and then used DVD2One to shrink it down and strip audio layers. I kept the 6 Channel Dolby Audio layer, and stripped out the rest, but the DVD's defaults is to play the 2 Channel Dolby. So if I just play the DVD, it plays with no audio, and I have to change manually which audio layer it plays. Is there a way for me to change which layer it defaults to before I burn it to a DVD?

Yeah, I selected to keep only the Dolby 6 Channel audio layer and to strip the rest. But if I just push play on the ripped DVD, no sound plays, I have to manually change it it track 2 (The Dolby 6.1 that I left). I just wanted to know if there was a way to change it to make it play the layer I left as default?

You chose 6ch even if it wasnt supported? Theres no way you can make a correction on the dvd once its burned. But if you used a dvd-/+rw you can erase it and redo the whole thing. Chose the 2ch this time.

I noticed the same thing. If your source dvd has both 2-ch stereo and 6-ch stereo, and you remove the 2-ch then no audio is played unless you manually change the audio when playing. Sometimes, that doesn't work either.

I suspect there is a way to fix this with IFOedit, but I don't know. I do know that the IFO file is where the audio track choices are stored. Its possible that 2-ch stereo is the only valid default choice, and you cannot default to 6-ch audio or DTS audio.

My solution is to remove the 6-ch and keep the 2-ch (and all other audio and subtitles too). This way, you save space that way and thus get a higher quality video. Some day there will be writable DVD-9's, and then you can make true 1:1 copies. Until then, you have to live with a few sacrifices to get a 9gig movie on a 4.7 gig disk. Or, you can divide your movie across two disks and use no compressions and keep everything.

Have you tried remapping the audio stream-id to 0x80? I believe a lot of DVD player default to playing the audio track with the id of 0x80.

I figured this one out another way, I would burn some movies that were 6-7GB's in size and they would come out smaller than the 4.36GB I wanted them. So what I did was add multiple audio channels. for example if a movies has a 2ch English and 6ch DTS English I would add them both. Not only would the movie come out to the correct size but the audio is the 6ch. You might try this tiggerboi

jnihil, How would I go about remapping that audio layer to 0x80? Sounds exactly like the answer I was looking for, but Im not sure how to edit that. I kept the 6 Channel rather than the 2 because I plan on upgrading to a surround sound system in the future, and given it is a concert/music DVD the audio is important, so I chose to keep the 6 channel.

I agree, the 0x80 audio stream is the default, and it can be set to anything. I just started backing up the new Harry Potter movie, and the DTS-6ch audio is 0x80 and the 2-ch audio is 0x82. So, it appears you certainly can set 6-ch audio as the default.

As to how to do that with IFOedit, I have no idea.

Well it looks possible to do this with ifoedit, but I can't verify it since I'm on the road right now with just a simple laptop and no ripped DVD or ifoedit on it.

Here's some evidence:

Good luck and let us know how you go.

Anyone else got any info? Im about to give up and just burn the DVD and deal with having to manually change the audio layer every time I play it.

Try stripping & compressing w/ DVD Shrink 2.3 <-(d/l here)

If no success there then yes it sounds like a manual operation to me...

tiggerboi, sorry mate, I knew I forgot to do something!

I *THINK* this is the way to do it in ifoedit:

1. Open the IFO file for the title-set in question (ie: VTS_01_0.ifo).

2. Go to the VTS_PGCITI then VTS_PGC_1. You'll see an object called 'audio stream status'. You should change this value for the audio you want to '32768' which is 0x80 (hex). I tried changing one of my backups from this value to '33024' and the audio stream-id had changed from 0x80 to 0x81 under VTS overview.

Have not yet tested how this plays on a DVD player, so perhaps you can let us know if this does the trick (make sure you make a backup!!).

Rgds,
jnihil.

Thanks Jnihil! I switched Audio Stream 1 Status to 33024 and Audio Stream 2 Status to 32768 (basically just flip flopped the numbers) and it seems to be working like a charm! Thanks again!
