i just assembled my new pc the other day, its and AMD Athlon64 +3700 939 with Asrock m/board with integrated nvidia geforce 6100 chipset + 2x512mb ddr400 ram, all in a NZXT Guardian case with 420w psu.

After assembling the pc, it worked for a full day after which I hear a loud pop sound and the pc just shuts down! i switch off the power supply immediately, wait 30 minutes then try to power it on again. The miraculous thing is, THE PC STILL WORKS ??? (lol)

However i am worried that the PSU could have a popped capacitor in it and may cause some voltage fluctuations and cause further damage to CPU and M/board...

Any advice from you techies will be much appreciated ! Please advise !

Take the cover off and examine all the caps. There shouldn't be any with rounded heads, they should all be flat.

You can monitor your voltages with PC Wizard 2006. It's a free program. http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

I wouldn't open the power supply. Check the motherboard and all your cards (sound and what others you have). Just get close to it and see if there is any "burn" type of smell.

If everything looks OK and your still worried, change power supply. You can get one at CompUSA (400 Watts) for about $40. If you shop around, you can find some good deals. Keep the one you got now as a spare.

If it was something on the motherboard it could still work but there would be problems showing up.

do you think if i keep running my pc as is after hearing the pop sound, it would cause any further damage to any of the components ? or just change the psu to be on the safe side ??

Are you sure the pop came from the computer and not the speakers? Has anything been acting strange? I hate to tell you to go get a power supply when you really don't need one. Do you do any overclocking? Did you get the monitoring program I suggested and if so what are the voltages?

If you really want to "play safe", I guess it wouldn't hurt.

i did get the software, (great piece of ware btw) and the voltages are good except the +12V is showing between +8.9v & +9.2v. The 3.3v is 3.35v and the -5v is showing -5.2v. which i think is reasonable, however the +12v voltage is whats worrying. Was thinking of getting a good cheap replacement like an Aopen 400w. Seems like theres good reviews on pcstats.com. Can you suggest anything ? (thanks for all your help btw)

That 12 volt is low. It is a concern as that is what is powering the CPU. The others are within range.

Here's a link to a good budget power supply.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023

It's on sale right now!

Let me know if that would suit your needs. It should. I like the fact it has the thermal wrap on the cables. Makes for better cooling within the case.
