I just installed XP Professional (I had 98 beforehand) on one of my PCs. Everything seems to work fine, but for some reason I can't connect to the internet. The ethernet cable is plugged in from my router and both the green/orange light is on. On my router, it indicates the connection is working fine (the light is blinking).
Yet it says that a network cable is unplugged. I can't figure out what caused this, any help is much appreciated.
Oh and on the device manager, the hardware is running properly, however something called a "PCI Simple Communications Controller" is not. Thanks again!
um well,see didn't your router come with an instalation cd???
my internet won't work either,unless I put this cd in that came with my router,it takes like 2 min and then the internet works???
Contact your isp first to ask them how to get it to work.
If you are using a pre-configured router which worked before, then you should need to do nothing with the router to connect.
It looks as though your PC is just not communicating to the router correctly any more.
Go into control panel and then network settings and look at the ethernet adaptor settings.
They will either be set to obtain an IP address automatically, or set with an address and gateway.
If its the first setting, then go to command line from run menu and do the following commands
cd\ <cr>
C:\ipconfig /all <cr>
Now make notes of what addresses are assigned to the adaptor.
IP Address (your ethernet adaptor)
Default Gateway address (routers Ethernet address)
DNS Address (also on router)
Now make sure you can ping the routers Ethernet address and DNS address from the same command line
C:\ping 192.168.0.1 <cr>(this address is an example of what will be seen in display from ipconfig /all).
If it pings then check the DNS settings in the network adaptor.
You can always test the DNS by trying to connect to a site such as Google without using DNS, just use the following in the IE address bar and see if it works to connect.(this will only work if the router is connected to the ISP and the PC can ping the router (default gateway)

Either way, it should be pretty straight forward to fix if you look at it bit by bit and make sure you record each part you have tested and confirmed as working.
If you are still stuck, record the results (addresses obtained etc...) and list them on next post.
Uh maybe I should have explained better.I'm not getting an IP adress, DNS, gateway,nothing.Instead, something's up with my hardware, but I can't figure out what.

My hardware is working correctly according to Windows, so I have no idea what's wrong. Pinging of my gateway failed as well.
Your media state is disconnected.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable you use is okay, although it shows as up at the router make sure the lights come on the PC port.
It looks as though you have a faulty cable with the transmission path from the router to the PC being broken.
TX from the PC to router is okay, as the light on the router is up indicating it is seeing carrier.
The fact that media state disconnected is showing, is definitely hardware, which is either going to be the TX pins on the router, the RX pins on the PC or the cable.
