when I save the files, a 400mb file turns into a 2.7gb file, how do I fix this?

I have heard about this before on the forums. More then just you are having this problem. I think umdgen is pretty much obsolete now. Vcdromx 3.6 is really good tho. It works for all games. As with umdgen, some games wont load correctly.
