Wow. dazila do your homework before trying to give any sort of advice on computers. Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT is nothing compared to an A64 X2 4200+. The 4200+ is even faster than your 3.4GHz Prescott core.
Though I recommend the socket 939 version, mrcapdown. The memory for the AM2s is much more expensive and even with the expensive stuff it's just not as fast.
Clockspeed is irrelevant when comparing AMD to intel. AMD processors are much more efficient than intel. So much so that a much lower clocked AMD easily outpaces higher speed intels. And it's not weak, floaty speed either, it's rock solid, stable speed.

okay here is what i think
1) you really Really dont need a cpu if you have one level or over 3.0ghz pentium 4 for anytihng today
2)I would rather spend 250 pounds on a different part if you have a fast processor already 3.0ghz P4
3)if you dont have enough ram spend it on the ram if you dnt need a quicker cpu
4) a video card you can get a grat one for that amount if you dnt need a quicker cpu

Quote: hey but its 2.2ghz dual core and i really dont think amd is better than intel
I just explained that. GHz IS NOT IMPORTANT!!!! MY GOD!
The X24200+ is is faster than the P4 3GHz by an insanely large amount.
And 3GHz is hardly enough for today's demanding applications. I can guarantee you that the P4 3GHz is going to struggle a lot in modern games. It is JUST enough and barely leaves you any reserve of speed.
He is not buying a new computer he is buying a new CPU. The Pentium 4 series is fairly weak compared the the Athlon 64 X2 series.
AMD is more efficient. It doesn't give it a little speed boost. It gives it a HUGE speed boost. Do your homework before you try to argue with the big guns.
AMD is much better than intel at the moment.

i dont seem to be having any trouble running any games with my pentium 4 3.4ghz HT cedar mill core so i dont see what you mean cause most games need you to have 2.4ghz, but remember if he has a intel cpu now he'll have to buy a motherboard aswell
the intel pentium 4 extreme edition is the best

Dazila---That chip is coming out soon that can beat it(for a little while).
But then AMD will bring out something new and beat that.
Check this thread for more details.

I was only trying to back up the statements, showing visual proof, of some other members around afterdawn. I'm not trying to start a fight, just end one by showing you proof that what others and I have said is true. That AMD X2 4200 is equal to a Pentium 4.2 and it seems you think that just Bcause it runs at 2.2Ghz its comparable to your 3.4Ghz

The FX-60 is indeed faster than the 3.73GHz Pentium EE.
I do happen to be an AMD fanboy but it just so happens that AMD does have faster processors than intel.
And for the record, the single core Pentium 4 processors are in a different class than the AMD dual-cores. The dualies are much faster. For a decent comparison. The Pentium D 940-950 at 3.2 and 3.4GHz respectively are about equal the the A64 X2 4200+ and 4400+.
I'm not saying that intel is really inferior. You are just comparing apples and potatoes here. The two are in a completely different performance class altogether.

Also, 2.4GHz for games is a severe understatement. 2.4GHz will suffer in FEAR. 2.8GHz is minimum for smooth play and 3.4 is actually just right.
Lower recommended specs sell more games.
