Can anyone tell me which codec compresses better DivX or XviD? And which makes for a clearer picture? Thanx

I would go with XviD since it is open source and free. It is also updated more that DivX and IMO provides better quality encodes faster.
there are many lengty comparisons that can be found on the intrnet check out doom9.org if you are really interested and have the time to read about it.
