Hello Everyone. Id just like to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I've modded an xbox here and there since I did mine a year and a half ago..I like to think I'm pretty familiar with the use of WinRAR, isos, and emulators and related tools. I spent about a week and a half researching and reading about xbox modding before attempting anything.

I've been browsing around the net for the last two days reading up..seems like alot of sites and posts contradict each other. I know I want to be able to run game backups. Emulators are attractive ofcourse...who can argue with super mario 3 on the same handheld as the new games? Anyway..Downgrading to 1.5 seems to be where its at for that purpose. I've noticed sites have been updated right before my eyes the last few days. At first glance my understanding was that no firmware ahove 2.01 could be downgraded. Now it seems that 2.5 and 2.6 can be...though its not known 100% whether factory purchased 2.5/2.6 can be downgraded safely.

The upc codes, which can easily be checked if purchasing from a shop, A-F are for 2.0 and lesser firmware versions. Yet if 2.5 and 2.6 can be converted reliably...what upc code signifies 2.5//2.6 on the old motherboard? Is there any way to tell?

I am also looking at getting a 4gb pro duo, seems hard to track them down. Are they officially released yet? Or are they only available from sandisk at $200+? macmall.com has the Sony pro duos on preorder for 132.99..

Basically I am looking to purchase, just not sure if I want to take the chance of buying at a shop, where inventory is moved quickly, and ending up with one of the new motherboards. I wouldnt be happy. I have no problems taking my time, chatting on the boards, and easing into the psp modding scene. Its quite different from working with the old box.

I have reservations about purchasing from any sites based in hong kong or japan, how will that effect me in the long run? Will the psp be region encoded to hong kong?

Anyone have any recommendations for places to purchase the pro duo // psp? Any other thoughts comments or ideas would be appreciated aswell.

Thanks,

Tcf

i personally downgraded my japanese 2.5 factory psp. i first upgraded to a US firmware 2.6. then used the psp-hacks.com downgrade package. it depends on what type of motherboard you have also. you can check the top right corner of the motherboard when you open the umd slot. if you see text, then it is not recommended to downgrade.

credits to qj.net forums. here is the firmware check on the box

no letter = 1.0 (Japanese Release) 1.5 (North-American release) confirmed
A = 1.5 confirmed
B = 1.51 confirmed
C = 1.52 confirmed
D = 1.52 confirmed
E = 1.52 confirmed
F = 2.0 confirmed
G = 2.01 confirmed
H = 2.50 confirmed
I = 2.60 confirmed

i got my sandisk 4gb for $170 after tax at buy.com. i'm not sure how much sony's 4 gig will cost, but it will most likely cost more than sandisk's. beware of fake pro duos also, there's a stickied guide on the front page.

and for your last question, no the psp is not region coded for games, meaning that you can play any game from any where in the world. but the movies are region coded. so if you buy a japanese psp, you cant watch US umd movies.

just check out the stickied guides. they really help.

Thanks for the info kcc, I geuss the real question then..since it ends up depending on the motherboard...are all factory 2.5 upc H's the new mobo? It seems like the firmware can be downgraded. But only if you have the old motherboard.

What stinks is that theres no way to check the motherboard without opening it. If you have the new motherboard, what then? You cant exactly take it back and swap it until you get the old one...can you? Buying used is starting to look attractive...assuming the psp is in great condition. I wouldnt trust this sort of thing to ebay though...my luck isnt that good.

I've heard a few people meantion buy.com I'll have to take a look at that. Thanks.

You can actually check what type of motherboard a PSP is without opening it, just check this pic:

Without opening it? Without opening the psp and voiding the warranty or without opening the box? I havnt really played psp much, other than a few hours when I borrowed my friends. Its hard for me to tell where your picture is on the psp//box.

From looking at http://www.modchipstore.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a...
you have to open the umd case, which means you have to open the box. Stores wont take it back once its open?

Just open it like you were putting a game,if the "1CB001 or 1C6001" is marked at the left side,you can downgrade.

what legend said, you'll only be able to see part of the letter code on the left, but if u get a clear code on the right side that reads IC1003 then you can't downgrade, so ask for another and check, if ur buying used (not a bad idea) u can do that after checking what firmware it has since 2.7/2.71 doesn't have a downgrade at this time, but as for the sites and things being updated, it's just showing you how quickly the lil bugger is being hacked lately.

Used is fine. I actually purchased today from a gamestop. I am pretty sure I have the old motherboard, just looking for a confirmation. Its also on 2.01 firmware, so I geuss I can use the 2.5//2.6 downgrader to downgrade it to 1.5 yes? I can** down grade to 1.5 from 2.5 and* 2.6 right? That way i can update to 2.6 and play the games i bought...

While holding the back of the psp toward me, with the UMD facing me, I see a code on the left side of the UMD case partially hidden by the UMD disc housing. It seems to say 1C6001. From what I've read I have an old motherboard...and <2.71 software...meaning I lucked out and can downgrade to 1.5?? :D

You are one legendary newb lol. Thats great that you researched all your shit before asking.
You are like the role model newbie. Of course you are newbie by title and not by knowledge but still.
But you just upgrade to 2.6 then use the easy downgrader.
Do you have GTA? You will need it.
Then basically any iso you want to play you will be able to with the emulators available.

Here is a pdf version of the compatibility list and everything you will be able to play: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/625

Well, I completely forgot you need a larger mem stick than 32mb to flash the psp. I grabbed a little card at gamestop...knew they wouldnt have a 4gb model. Going to have to wait for my 4gb to come in from buy.com so I can downgrade this little puppy.

Id just like to thank everyone for the help.
