How do I permanently add subtitles to my Mpg-file?

Hello everybody!

I want to permanently add subtitles to my SVCD files. It must be a way to do this without converting back to avi and then encode back to mpeg2 with the subtitles. The subtitles I want to add is in *.txt format...is they possible to add. If they aren't, maybe someone know where to get other formats that will work? I have used TMPGEnc to encode the avi-movies into mpeg-format (everybody recommends DVD2SVCD, but it hasn't worked very well for me)

While I'm still asking you guys questions I might as well ask if there are any encoders that isn't that slow. I mean, it takes about 8-9 hours to convert an 1h 30min long movie to mpg with TMPGEnc, and I have 2Ghz P4 and 512 RAM!?

I've tried to find this answer in the guides and stuff, but I only find how to convert from DVD to SVCD + subtitles.
