I have a sony DRU-800A burner that used to be in my desktop PC. Got rid of the desktop, bought a laptop, but the laptop's dual layer burner doesnt support booktyping.

So, I bought an enclosure housing that has EIDE and power connections inside, hooks up to a device, and provides a USB 2.0 external connection to the computer. A windows machine just recognizes it as another drive, and while I can locate and use the drive in DVD Decrypter, it fails to write, does several attempts, and then times out. Not sure what the issues is, I know this burner used to work in the desktop PC.

Anyone have experience with this?

Can you please post an error log that is causing the problem with your burner.

how does windows recognize the drive? Does it say it's a DVD-RW Drive? If not then it's only recognizing it as a reader. Do you have the original installation software for your drive? Or did it come with your desktop computer?

This is a hardware problem, there is a lack of communication between the drive and the program/computer. More than likely it is the enclosure or the other device you have hooked up. Have you tried any other burning program to see if that works. Semaphore Timeout errors with USB drives in Decrypter are common, try ImgBurn and see if that will do it, or some other program. Also, check and make sure the firmware on the burner is up to date, sometimes this can cause the error.

it IS a semaphore timeout error. where can I find ImgBurn software, and where might I look for an updated firmware version?

And no, the burner did not come with the computer, i bought it as a standalone component.

Current for your drive is KY06. If decrypter is recognizing your drive you can check and see what the fw you have on the burner, just use the tools tab, choose drive and capabilities you will then see your drive make/model and current fw.

You can get imgburn here

Is the drive ripping and reading a DVD, can you play one from the drive?
