when you put the backup in the ps2 make sure it is snug on the spindle and spin it once to make sure it spins freely. sometimes with a fliptop the backup isnt on the spindle properly. its happened to me and others before.

Use 8x discs. 16x aren't very good & most PS2's can't read from them properly. When you burn, do so at half the disc's max speed; so 4x for 8x discs.
And Verbatim are supposed to be quite good, as are RITEK G05.

if you are using 16x then you should burn at 4x-8x for good results. but even at the lowest burn speed i would suspect that the games would at least boot up and maybe play alittle choppy, at the worst.

First of all, drop that email address, it's against the forum rules (use the edit button to remove it)
Sounds like a laser problem ,have you tried cleaning the laser lens?

Thanks Dan sorry about e-mail didnt know... the thing is it will play normal ps2 ps1 or swap magic cd backups It will not even get to the load program screen only on the dvd swap magic just keeps saying insert playstation disc, Im only double checking Before I start messing with the laser (which I will have to look up, however I have had it to bits to tape the inner switch down as the magic keys are to hard for the hinge one)it just seems strange it was fine all day yesterday. What normally causes the laser to go iffy?

most important factor = media. If you use bad media it's harder on the laser and causing it to burn out more quickly... what media do you use for your backups?
Have a look here for adjusting laser: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1
Also what version is your PS2?

to be honest any I have, I usually use full face white ones so I can print the centres on them by ritex, what I cannot get my head round is the fact everything else plays fine. I assume its not the swap magic dvd as it still works in my fat PS2 the model im having problems with is the slim black one.

Can you get the Disc ID and post it here? Use DVD Decrypter and put your disc in, and in the right hand side it'll tell you this info.
It could be that the swap magic DVD is harder to read so when the laser is dying that's the first thing that fails to work, the originals are a lot easier to read so they still work fine

DVD dycrypter wont read the disc (i presumed you meant the SM disc?) the irony is the old fat PS2 has run for years on these same disc and had a hard life of my 7 year old with the slide tool and been apart more times than hot dinners as he pops the white tray closer out all the time, the slimline one has only been on SM for a week? and treat with the best care and attention, another thread suggested cleaning the laser with isopropyl alcohol and acoton bud, will surgical spirit do or am I clutching at straws?
PS I realy do appreciate your time and advice

No I meant your backups?
Surgical spirit will be fine :) basically you just want something with high alcohol content so that most of it will evaporate off
What version's your PS2? Look at the back of the console, it'll say something like SCPH-7xxxx. If it's a V12 (http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm) then it's known to have laser problems, so I wouldn't be surprised that the laser is half dead already :(

Yes the number is SCPH - 70003, and below is a backup through DVD dycripter as requested, looking bad.....are they now so cheap its easier to buy a new Ps2 than fix the laser? Or wait till PS3?

Hate to tell you this, but you've missed out the info that dan actually asked you to post up, which was the DVD-R's Identity code eg: RITEKG05, so your post is worthless.

You don't have to be so harsh on him ace. :) I think his biggest factor is he said he's using the printable dvd-r's. I think those with the full white face aren't worth a damn because they're "heavier" than normal dvd-r's, therefore your ps2 won't play it.
Since you have a slimline ps2, I suggest using either TY, Verbatim, or Sony DVD+R's booktyped to DVD-ROM like I do. I hardly ever have problems.

Have a look at this link in my sig: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/353503 , see the second image about half way down on the right there's something that says "Disc ID", that's what we are after. You need to put your DVD-R in your DVD burner for this

don't multi post, read the forum rules please.
Do you use modchip or swap magic? Only a few support DVD9 so chances are you'll need to rebuild. Read the stickies
