I noticed on the firmware page that there was an update to change my burner to a dual format burner, ND-2500AD. My question is, is there a chance I could really do damage to my burner and destroy it or does it actually work? Has anyone done it with success? I've got the NEC ND-2100 AD.

I don't have your burner so I can't say exactly what would happen if you flashed it to that firmware....... but I have the same problem..... I have a philips 8631 and it's a rebadged BenQ .... there are cross flash firmware that I can use to make it a BenQ 1620 or 1655, something like that! I want to do it but I desided not to because the risk of hurting my burner (which has been a champ since I got it) was too unthinkable so I chicked out and bought a BenQ 1655 external .... that's one way of doing it! Just didn't want the hassels if anything went wrong.

I don't have your burner but I do have the NEC3520A and I used the firmware from the Liggy & Dees (think this is right) so I could book-type it and I had no problems at all. I was concerned, like everyone else, that I might screw it up. The burner cost me $35 on sale at NewEgg, so I decided if I screwed it up, I would simply replace it with something that did not need to be cross-flashed.

I'm just worried if I screw it up it would harm my settings in the computer and screw my computer up! I'm not concerned about the drive really...... but since my drive is working great with my Taiyo Yuden +Rs I wanted another one for the -Rs. And now I have a new player that plays everything! my old player only played the +Rs and no MP3s. so I desided to buy a new player for the tv and make sure it was HDMI upgradeable and it was cheap enough.......... no it's not a HD-DVD or a Blue-Ray........ but it does have an HDMI for better quality:

took out the old ..... plugged in the new and now I have my MP3 DVD that holds over a 1000 songs on it and it plays right through my Surround sound system really really good!

can't wait for my new burner to get here on Friday!

IHoe I see a lot of your postings...you're a pretty smart cookie!

It sounds like we all share the same fears and hope for the same things from our drives. Something to kick around anyway. I appreciate the comments so far. Hopefully, more will give their opinions on the subject and maybe someone who's made the switch will offer theirs as well.

I did a small search and this is what I came up with:

http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/2500/

The NEC ND2500A was released by NEC at the end of 2003, followed by the ND2510A in 2004. You will also find ND2100A drives which all share the same hardware, but differ in firmware to disallow DVD-R or DVD+R-DL writing.

There is a NEC drive conversion tool to convert ND2100A into ND2500A/ND2510A drives, but you need to flash a 2500/2510 firmware after conversion. According to NEC the ND2100/ND2500 drives do not have the necessary calibration for writing double layer discs but there are no known issues from people not able to burn these discs.

hope this helps

according to NEC your drive has no known issues after convertion and cross flashing to the ND250A/ND2510A.......GO FOR IT if you want to burn DL disks. I have the ability to burn the DLs but I hardly every do. If your drive is working properly and you're getting great results with your single layer DVD-5s.....is it worth the firmware upgrade? worse that can happen is you buy a new drive.....

I'm just sorry that no one else replied to this thread that has the same problem you do with a solution for you.

Well, I don't have a NEC but a BenQ 1655 oem (Philips) that I crossflashed to BenQ FW. I was very concerned while doing it but forged ahead anyway. My advice would be that unless having DL capability is important to you, I would'nt bother. I do and rarely use DL. On the other hand, burners are very reasonably priced if, on the off chance, your burner is trashed. According to the CDFreaks forum it's commonly done with good results but I was more concerned with outside influences like a power outage wrecking things.

You should also note that any DL capacity you can enable on that drive will be essential useless as DL was in it's infancy back then. Things have changed drastically since then as burner manufacturers have honed hardware and firmware in an attempt to make DL burning more universally compatible.
