Hi everyone, I hope this is the right spot to post this if it isnt mods please move it to the apprporate spot. I have been backing up my movies for the past 2 years pretty much without any problems. Although now starting about a month ago alot of movies i back up will not work on my moms dvd player, the media i am using isnt the best I already know this im using memorex right now but than i also tried some sony discs and some worked and some didnt. What the weird part is, is my moms dvd player will sit there and try to read it and it acts like there isnt anything on the disc like its blank. I tried it in mine and everyone of the movies works on my dvd player. They also work on the computer. So I had my mom go out and buy a new dvd player figuring the one she had was bad or sumthen. Well i was wrong it is still doin the same thing. I have no clue what is goin on. Anyone with any help about this would really be helpful thanx. Sorry for making this such a long post!

You should get better media.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

What type of blank media are you using DVD-R or DVD+R or are you booktyping them? DVD-R are more compatible than DVD+R unless you booktype them into dvd-rom's then virtually all dvd players will be able to read them.
Like dialysis said ues better media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim also Maxell and sony but only if they are made in Japan (MIJ's)

im using DVD+R what do you mean by booktyping them i have never heard of that? its weird though cuz they all used to work before like i said i have been using memorex for a year successfully. Is the new dvd players more sensitive to the DVD+R because the one that my mom had is a brand new one where mine is like 2 or 3 years old.

First thing we need to know if your dvd writer supports it. What is the make of your dvd writer?

It will not alter any settings on your dvdwriter or PC. All it does is set your blank DVD+R to a dvdrom disc.

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:
1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php 4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!
follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.
also read this:

here is a media guide for you:

it works on a couple but still isnt completly right. How do you put the speed down. The reason why i ask is I have it set to burn at 4x but for some reason it burns at 6x. my discs are 8x is there a way too force it to write at 4x instead of 6x

So you are using DVD Decrypter to burn, yes.
In the box above settings what does the supported write speeds say?

You need better media like I suggested in my first post.
Memorex is not good media at all and should be avoided.
Excellent brands of media are Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim these are the best brands you can buy. All good media are made in Japan (MIJs)

It will not burn at 4x because it is not supported by your blank media. Untill you upgrade to better media there is not much you can do.
You should really burn with Imgburn as it is the beter burner out of the two and is still being updated. http://www.imgburn.com/

@nate2005
Just a thought, but you might want to get better media now rather than wait until you use up the Memorex. There is a very good chance that a little later down the road, you will have trouble reading the Memorex ones and you will have to "reburn" what you are burning now. Just trying to save you a little time and aggravation. Good Luck.

you got real good advise from Pazzini and Tsquare...... I would listen to them. many members here call Memorex=Memosux! keep that in mind the next time you burn.
