That link isn't active anymore?

I used the Roxio one to eliminate any DVD software that would be on the system via another addon program. I don't remember having Roxio ever, but used it anyway.

Still no dice, and here is my recent error message...

you are still using the same disc type try to find better quality discs such as Binkie suggested. This could actually be causing your problem

Hi JSDTX
Did you buy this drive or is it an oem drive from the PC?
The firmware version looks like an oem version.

@Xevlys
That was Gwen on the CMC :) But we all agree on that - better to use Verbs or made in Japan Sony or Fuji.

Where is the best/most cost effective site to buy these discs from? I am seeing this post on Amazon, which isn't bad.

So far I have used HP, TDK, and some cheesy Fry's brand :-) The last GQ brand one was for Burns that were give aways to others, or just data.

I started another post regarding questions and requesting help from others to post where they get their best Media Bargains online.

Sorry about that faux paus on my part regarding the multipost, just someone responding to my query told me to repost this in the Nero issues page. So here I am, still have not resolved this problem.

It is an OEM replacement from Emachines. The second, for the first ate it due to a bad power supply. The original one was a sohw1635s and the replacement is a 1633s lite-on. Everything was working, then one day it would burn 90% of a disc, then only 80, then 70, till it failed too often to merit trying any longer. After about a week it worked at full capacity, but started again. It seemed more like a mechanical failure. Just with the new drive, I get failures from the get go.

Any suggestions, for I have reloaded all the drivers for the unit and the ide controller in safe mode. Still Nada, but will try some Verbatim media in the morning when I venture out.

Thanks

well sonys u can get almost anywhere in stores like BestBuy, Frys, Office Depot etc., but they r usually the made in Taiwan ones. i havent had problems with those but the made in Japan are better. The others like verbatim and Maxell you can get online. I dont buy discs online so i dont know any good sites tho :/

Ok that's why the Litey firmware isn't working. You'd have to check w/ e-machines and see if they have a newer one.
Or you could cross flash to a LiteOn firmware but that will void any warranty.
Try the verbs and see how it goes.
You can also buy genuine Taiyo Yuden online here:

editted to add- try new media and see how that goes - but you've had 3 drives go so far & a bad power supply? Something else may be up. You might want to pick up a new ide cable too - they're pretty cheap.

I replaced the IDE cable. I had burned over 300 or more DVDs on that last drive before it started to fail. So is that normal? I also went to that site you listed and bought a 200pk of 8x media, since that was what everyone suggested. Should I upgrade this burner to a lightscribe? What is the optimal setup that I should have?

No that's not normal - I have 2 drive's that each are over 1000 burns and one of them is an older LiteOn. Not all drives are created equal though. Still newer good ones 300 should be a cake walk.

How old is this pc and what has been changed/replaced on it?
Trying to figure out if something else is going on here too.
Another drive might not correct this.

The ones you just ordered from sms I mainly use w/o a problem. Been using them for 2 years at least.

Another thing to try is switching the drives. Make the LiteOn master (set jumper pin to master also). Leave the Toshiba off. Try burning. Works then add the Toshiba as slave (set jumper pins to slave)

Well this t6522 was bought during Thanksgiving of 2002. The power supply went bad, and I replaced the first drive thinking that was the problemo. Who knows, maybe this second time it was the 100pk spindle of Memorex media, but I burned about 40 or so discs of that before I started to have issues? So the first original drive was a power supply issue, this replacement one could have been the media. Just this older model 1633s is not even recognizing this HP or Memroex media I have, or the TDK. I will just buy some Verbatim locally in the morning and test it out, who knows?

The jumper was set to slave when I got this unit that only had one optical drive in it. I added the toshiba, and the only way it would recognize it was on cable select.

I have a 1633S and have had it for 2 years with no problem, the fw in mine is the LIte-on BSOY, your is definitely a OEM version. Here are a couple of threads which discuss emachines computers and this drive with the fw you have. You can crossflash the drive which may get it to work, but it is always a risk.

Try the verbs and see how that goes.
Cable select uses a special cable - not an ide cable. May or may not be part of your problem.
The Memorex you used early - that's a typical burn problem with them (my experience at least). Start out okay then go down hill :)

You can always try the crossflash as arniebear linked to - again run a risk. May be worth a shot if the drive isn't working and no longer under warranty.

You can use an IDE cable for CSEL as long as it is an 80 conductor one, and not a 40.

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCS-c.html

My two Dells run on CSEL, because that is what Dell wants for whatever reason, and have the 80 conductor IDE cable on the primary for both my Lite-on DVD Rom and my Plextor burner.

Txs for the link (learn something new everday!)- you can tell which way this author believes the industry should go.
So if using csel on an 80 ide should both drives be set to csel or would it not even matter? (I might have missed that in the article).

Both of mine are set to CSEL, but that is a Dell and anytime I have put in a new drive I set it to this, as CSEL is peculiar to Dell. I have never had a problem burning or with DMA, if you look at the Device Mgr, it will say the Lite-on is the Master and the Plex the Slave.

Well I have not tried the new riskier firmware for Emachine is going to send me another drive, the 1635s they originally had in my system.

I tried the burn with Verbatim and is said it failed at 4x. Now could it be that somewhere there is a setting off in the software?

I will wait for the newer drive at this point, but just want to say.

Thanks for all the tech help guys, you are all amazing and quite helpful :-) For even though I have not resolved this issue, I did have a few bad burns that I know now I can overcome for good.

Get something other than a Lite-On. I've had nothing but problems with their crappy products.
