Hey all...long time no see. Quick question. Im trying to get a little more hmmph out of a old emachines. The emachines has a 900 intel celeron. I have a 933 pentium 3 sitting here in a gateway mobo. The mobo is dead, but I know for a fact the 933 pentium 3 is still alive. Are they the same socket so I can slap it in the emachines? Do you think I will have to reload windows in doing so, or no?
Sorry not been round yall. Been busy with school and what not....

should be about the same socket, and you shouldn't have to reload windows

is a socket 360 cpu. the 933 is probably 133x7 whereas the 900 is probably 100x9. don't think you have to reload xp but not certain as not come across that situation yet.

Thanks ddp. Didnt think of the stepping there. Hmm...I wonder if the bios of the emachines board will recognize it and run the pentium 3 at the proper speed or at the celeron speed? Guess I will find out....LOL!

Well didnt work. It must have trashed the board or something. I put the 933 in and it wont go past post. So I put the celeron back in and it still wont go past post.
So I stuck the 933 back in the board it came from and that wont go past post either. Guess two boards and cpus are trashed now. Oh well...
And yes I tried clearing cmos, etc...no good

voltage &/or bus speed of 933 is what did in emachine. 900 might still work on another board as might 933 but iffy on that 1.

if you get the systems to boot IE, {turn on}with out it beeping at you the then the cpu is working .what did you swap from one to the other ,on emachines to reset the board ,take the button cell batt , out unplug the power supply from wall outlet and hold in the power button for 10 seconds.put the button cell back in, should boot back to day one.should be the same for gateway.both systems are with in the same clock settings range should boot unless something conected to the mobo is bad or dammaged , bad memory ,wrong clock setting for memory will halt system, and also check power supply,cd rom and hard drive if any have bad ground will halt system

Nah I gave up. The cpus are obviously working. I got the emachies to display the status by holding delete upon start up. It listed the 933 running at 700 and the celeron running at normal 900 speed. But by putting the 933 in it, it must have corrupted the bios. Wont enter setup and stays stuck with either the emachines logo or entering setup message. Its not a removable bios chip, so I cant do DDP's idea eiter. So i gutted it and sold most of it today except the board. Amazingly even after I stuck the celeron in the gateway board where the 933 came from it still boots. I was told the gateway board was scrap so thats why i was taking out the 933 to put into the emachines. But you know what? The gateway board boots both the celeron and 933 with the same copy of windows. So i guess the emachines tri-gem board was junk if it cant handle a cpu swap. Or maybe emachines programmed the bios to screw up if a cpu was changed. Who knows. Live and learn. Never going to try to upgrade a oem board. The really amazing thing is by putting both the celeron and 933 in the gateway board didt screw it up. And it registers the cpu correctly. Guess intel makes good boards, even know this didnt have onboard sound..LOL! Long live intel aka gateway and emachines suck..Ha Ha!
I will say one thing. Even running a savage 2000 agp card and a 933 proc....this runs decent. On it right now as fact.... Guess sometimes speed aint everything......
