Hi, first off I'm new here and am new as well to BT. I'm having an issue, well, maybe not, but I'm not sure as to whether or not I'm getting the appropriate download speeds for my connection. I am not sure what info is relevant for assistance, but I'll list what I think I need:

Windows XP SP2 - Did the firewall port thing for 6881
2gb ram, 250gb hard drive
SBC Yahoo! DSL internet (Chicago, Illinois) advertised as 3.0mbps/512kbps DSL Pro
Actual speed: www.speakeasy.net = 2495 download, 420 upload

I'm using BitTorrent 4.20.4 and I do not have a router (or is the modem considered a router and I need to "Port Forward" with it?)

Now, the problem is that I think I am getting too slow of a download. Apparently, in comparison to other users who get 100kbps+ always.

For the info:

Port is 6881 and I have my max upload set at 37kbps and download at 357kbps (doesn't make a difference between this and unlimited).

I'm currently downloading 1 file that is 10gbs in size.

It's already past that startup stuff, about 3 hours into the download perhaps. The downloading is between 20kbps and 50kbps, 37kbps upload.

There are currently 80 peers and 9 seeds.
Time remaining estimate currently says 4 days.
2.5% completed 3 hours into the download

Now, I'm just wondering if these seem normal for the situation, given that the torrent may just be a "slow" file. Or is there something I have to do to optimize my performance? Such as getting rid of things that are blocking it out. Please help me and thanks in advance. In return, I'll of course try to give back to this forum community, though I do not know what I can do given that I'm a newbie, lol :(

With that many peers, that's probably a normal speed for that torrent.
If there where more seeds, it would be different.

Would there be a recommendation for me to test my cap limit? Like 20+ seeds and 10 peers? If they are normal speeds, then that's good, but howcome some people have to do these port forwards and all these other tweaks to get the speeds some people get by just downloading and installing? Also, what is the rate for good download speeds, like how many peers for every seeder? In any case, would switching to another Torrent client change things a lot? Something like utorrent gets 200kbps and maybe others are usually 30kbps and <?

But at one point during my download, I was checking my network (all 80 peers are downloading at 10kbp or less), and it was still the same, about 80 peers and 7 seeders, but for 4 minutes the speed just went to 250kbps solid. I don't know what's up with that, but it has never gone that high since then. Also, at the same time, there was another peer on the wathced peer list that had about 150kbps. But with the same exact peers and seeders now, howcome it's around a steady 30kbps? Sometimes going down to 10kbps for short periods. What are the mechanics or factors involved in attaining high speed in bit torrent? Apparently it's not just peers and seeders? Or at a certain point maybe a seeder was uploading at a much faster rate and then left? Sorry for all these questions and if I am wasting someone's time let me know.

Click the first link in my sig and snag the BT Bible, it should answer pretty much any question you might have.

If it doesn't, while on that site, check out the p2p tutorials section...in particular, the "Speed up my Torrent" tut.

The BT Bible 1.2, no longer hosted on rapidshare!:

Static? Dynamic? What's wrong with your torrent? Tweaks? Fixes? Troubleshoots? All that and more...

Ok, I'll go there before further inquiring about my problems here, but how do I open the file? It is a PDF file. Is that adobe?
