Hi, I am having problems getting my sisters computer to connect online. She uses the computer when she is away at school, but about a month ago, the internet just stoped working on it. I have it at my house now, and am trying to get it to connect on my cable link. I formated it, put windows back on it, and installed the ethernet card. The device manager says the card is installed (and I tried two different cards).

The thing is, I connect the ethernet cable, and try to connect online and it won't work. The device manager has no listing for the cable modem, not even the ? it usually shows when something is unidentifed. I tried the install cd's that came with my cable modem, but they don't help.

The computer is running Win98, and my cable modem is a Motorola SurfBoard.

If you need any more info, let me know. And thank you for any help you can give.

Go to Start> Run. Type "cmd" (without the quotes). In the prompt that comes up type (again without the quotes) "ipconfig /release".
Then "ifconfig /renew". Type "exit" to leave the window. Try the connection.

Ok, I opened the MS-DOS prompt (I don't know if this is the same as what cmd was ment to do though), and ipconfig /release gave me a short list titled Windows 98 IP Config Command line options. And ifconfig /renew just said bad command or file name.

Try it again with the DOS prompt. The commands are:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Make sure you type them correctly. You might have to do it several times for them to actually work.

I am about to try it. The problem might me that in your first message you said "ifconfig /renew" not ipconfig /renew.

Ok, the command prompt accepted ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, but I still have the same problem.

Ok, here is what it says:

IP Address: 169.254.82.89
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: (Nothing)
DHCP Server: 255.255.255.255

There is no DNS Server

And under all that, is a heading saying 2 Ethernet adapter. Under that all the above info. is repated, but for IP address it says: 169.254.183.253

And again, thank you for taking the time to help me out.

And do you think it is software problem? Or could it be hardware?

I am sorry that it took so long fro me to get back. I had a death in the family, and havn't been on at all.

In the network in control panelunder the configuration tab it says the following networn components are installed:
Cilenf for MS Network
MS Family Logon
D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter
D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter (Listed twice)
Dial-Up Adapter
VIA Rhine 2 Fast Ethernet Adapter (The computer has a built in Ethernet port on the mothorboard, but when I set up the computer for the first time it would not accept the drivers that came with it, but I installed it this time to see if it would work)
TCP/IP-> DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter
TCP/IP-> DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter
TCP/IP-> Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP-> VIA Rhine 2 Fast Ethernet Adapter

Under the Identification tab it just has the Computer name and workgroup.
And under Accecc Control it just has two check-boxes. The one for "Share-level access control" is checked.

Thank you.

I am really sorry for not getting back sooner. I just have a lot of things going on right now.

Ok, I removed the card from the computer, and it is no longer listed in the device manager. I tried connecting through the built in ethernet port, but no luck.

are you using network cable or usb to connect because modem does not need driver if using newtwork cable? is the cable a crossover or straight thru? compare the ends side by side & see if the colored wire are in the same location.

I am using an ethernet cable. I know the cable and the modem work, because that is how I am talking to you now. When I try the connection on the other computer, I take the cable out of this computer and hook it to the other computer, then turn the computer on.

try the ipconfig/release before connecting & turning on the other computer. do a winipcfg on the win98 computer at the run command. might have to shutdown the cable modem & remove the coax cable for 10-20 seconds before 98 can get on the net. i use win98se on my computer but have a router so i just hookup other computers with different os's with no problem. the only time i had a problem was with laptops with no net connector than had to do the proceedure above to use the usb port on my modem. resolved that by getting an usb net adapter.
