Okay my problem is my read speed. i have two DVD burner Pioneer DVR-108, Sony DRU-500, i just mainly use my pioneer for everything.
It usually took only around 12-15 min reading from 6x-9x to rip a DVD, now it is taking around 25-35 min reading at 3x
with DVD Decrypter and DVDFab decrypter
also all my burns have been the same speed 8x, and have not slowed down
i also have 2 PCs which are pretty much exact on all the specs even have the same Pioneer DVR-108 burner, I just bought ATL brand new disk right out of the box, decrypted with my PC downstairs using good ol' DVD Decrypter only took 10 min reading @ 9x speed,
came up to my other PC and it took around 28 min reading @ 3x speed
WTF
PS. checked DMA settings, they are all on

Read speeds depends on the disk and the program settings..... I have my read speeds set to 6x for DVDDecrypter.... but if the disk is new it will go above the 6x settings! Make sure there are no fingerprints or scratches on the disk and you should get better read speeds.

Okay, I reinstalled all of my drives, and i ripped a couple of my backups and they read at a normal speed around 6-7x, however, when i try and rip a commercial DVD it still only reads at 2x speed, this way too slow when it always use to be around 6x at least, i did also try it with a brand new right out of the case dvd no scratches or nothing and still reads at 2x speed. WTF
also i cant remember if that setting has always been like that, i have never changed it, but i thought it was always the ASPI interface, not sure though,
PLEASE if anybody has more suggestions
Is my burner going out? I do use it alot

your I/O settings are the same as mine. did you set your read settings above? Like I said, read speeds depends upon the disk it is reading.
while you're at it, and you're implying that your drive might be going, check on your firmware to see if it's up-to-date:

@ Ihoe,
yes i did set the read speed at 6x and still no go, it seems like it is only reading the booktype of dvd-Roms slow, aren't all of the commercial DVDs booktype set at dvd-Rom? every backup i put in all read much higher and are about the same speed.
BTW there r firmware updates but i thought that those updates are generally for burning at higher speed with certain types of new media, have had no problem burning.
Also i did try and upgrade to the 1.20 version a couple weeks ago but in the command prompt it said there was no available target?
edit-
14 mins to rip a single layer disk is unacceptable

Firmware for your burner as that sets new write strategies for new media thats out..
Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. Every company has its own methods to allow you to do a firmware upgrade. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. When you download the new firmware and open it up to install, it will ask you which drive to install the firmware.... pick the correct one!
the N/A that you highlighted is showing you that the KEY is (N)ot
(A)vailable. You have to download the firmware and install it to your Drive!
this is from the Firmware page: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
hope this helps!~

ok i went and looked on the box and seen that it is an DVR-A08XL
and not DVR-108 like it said in my device manager, so i DL the right firmware and install it. however it is still reading extremely slow like at 3x, and like i said earlier it rips all my back ups around 6x
this is a commercial dvd
crap i cut off the average speed, well it was around 2x
this is a back up
also maybe this is why it is so slow

I'm sorry to inform you but it's the DISKS that are being read..... you know why your backups will read faster??? That's because your drive burned them!!!!! so of course it will be able to read them faster than a foriegn DVD! The DVDs in the store will go as fast as the burner will allow it to go! If it has smudges..... or even if it's new.... it will only go as fast as your burner can read them. This is the final reality of it all. sorry. but .... this doesn't mean that your burner is going!

Sorry but i just dont understand why?
can u explain why i take the same DVD and i put it in my PC and rip it and it goes at 3x, then i take that same DVD put it in my other PC which has the exact same burner and Specs are about the same as far as hardware goes and it rips the dvd at 10x, HOW COULD THIS BE?
the conclusion i get from doing that is,, it is not the disk, as i have said in my earlier posts.
BTW that other PC that i have is still running on the older firmware the 1.10 version, so the firmware can not be the cause of this either.
also i ruled out the ide cables because wouldn't i have trouble burning if the cable went bad, i think so?

Well, obviously something is different from one pc to the other! So, if you are convinced that your drive is bad..... replace. I have my opinion and you have yours... don't kill the messenger, just because you asked for opinion and question why. Could be any reason! I'm not perfect either, but I have experienced a lot over the years with PCs since 1970. If you have two computers that are exactly the same and one isn't working as the other is..... then you already know the answer and I would have just replaced the drive ....... if that's the case. I only wish you much luck.

Hello Ihoe and others that want to help.
i figured it out why it is so sloooow to rip(but still cant get it to change).
my current transfer mode is Ultra DMA mode 2 see the pic
now i have done the uninstall thing without the mode changing to DMA 4.
dont know what to do to get it in mode 4, maybe it was a windows update?
I also called pioneer tech support and he said that the read speed works best at transfer mode 4
Another thing is i know that my other PC downstairs has a transfer mode 4

Hey 300bowler
Just a thought - the ide cable on this pc is it a 40 pin or 80 pin?
Did you try uninstalling the drive itself in device manager too?

hello Binkie,
It is a 40pin ide cable,
and yes i did uninstall the burner itself too(actually a long time ago, when i had 2 burners hooked up, i just recently took one out cuz i thought maybe that was why the transfer mode was only at 2 for both burners,
so i didn't try that recently, i did uninstall the driver for the ide controller and when i did that the dvd burner dissapeared from the device manager, i think i will try and uninstall the burner first, instead of the ide first and see what happens

Ok for dma modes above 2 you'll need a 80 pin cable (ata 133). You can buy one at newegg.com for like $5. Shipping not that bad too on them - still cheaper than what I found instore.

hi binkie, got a question,
Does it matter what burner u have ? to be able to use a 80 pin ide cable or that doesn't matter.
I will be going to bestbuy tomorrow so i will pick one up to see if that helps

Hey 300bowler
The 80 pin supports all of the dma modes. The Sony you have though - the fastest mode it will do to is Ultra DMA 2.
I have the Pioneer 108 model too. I had to switch back to a 40 pin (80 went bad) & did notice a few minutes more diff in ripping. Bought a new 80 and all was good again for me . I did have to uninstall the ide channel for it to go back to Ultra DMA Mode 4.
Your cable may be going and that might be the reason for the increased times.
At Best Buy (my area) they only had one brand & wanted $20 - cheapy me said keep it :)
Are you keeping up on regular maintenance like disc cleanup and system defrags, virus/spyware scans? System defrags depending on how bad the pc is fragmented can also help speed things up.

hey binkie,
yes i do keep up the maintenance, run anti-virus,regisrty fixer, spyware, defrag once per week
Also i took out the Sony burner and left the pioneer(Newer+DL burns) in, havent tried the 80 pin yet but will and post back the results
PS i cant stand having to wait 25 min to rip a dvd to my HDD
Thanks for the suggestions

Thought you probably did the maintenance bit - just checking :)
25 mins would get on my nerves too - big time. If it's a scratched up disc that's one thing (still annoying though)
Keep us posted.
If I think of anything else that hasn't been covered I'll let you know.
