CPU for Video Ripping and Burning?

I need a fast CPU that will work best for ripping DVDs, converting .avi to dvd and stuff like that. It takes hours for my 3.0 P4 to convert downloaded tv episodes to dvd. I need something quicker, but I don't want to break the bank. I have a gig if ram on board.

more info would help. do you want to keep your existing motherboard? if so we need to know what socket it supports. also, what is your exact price range?

I think I will replace the motherboard as well. The board is a socket 478. I would like to stay below $400 for both or just replacing the processor. Whatever will make it faster.

What program are you using to encode those tv episodes. You can figure that it will take about 2 hours, or more, for every hour of what you are trying to encode, using software like Nero or Roxio.
The length of time is dependent on the speed of your processor, since encoding is CPU intensive, not RAM intensive.

ConvertXtoDVD is the prorram I use. I convert 5 episodes to 1 DVD. It takes about 2 hours.

this will help u i had a p4 3.0ghz like 7 days ago now i have a pentium d 3.0ghz overclocked to 3.82ghz what took me exactly 1:30 converting videos using Nero now takes me 22min

couple more questions, is your current RAM DDR or DDR2. Is your current graphics card AGP, PCI-E or integtated.

I have regular DDR PC3200 memory, 1024MB and the graphics are integrated. I didn't think the graphics card would matter?

@ elokito the reason behind why you have such short encoding times it because you have a dual core processor which are amazin at encoding

oh but i recomend to him not to buy yet ad in a period of three weeks or less dual core processors are dropping up to 50% in price, i read this in a thread, check on the front page or maybe 2-3 pages back

the pentium d 805 is already pretty cheap, i think its 125 over at newegg and it overclocks amazingly well. at tomshardware, they got it to almost 4ghz.

the pendium d 930 (the one i have) could go to past 4ghz with stock cooling i havent clocked it that high since my ram is stoping me

your graphics card does matter because you either need to buy a new motherboard with integrated graphics (which seems to severely limit your choice) or buy a new graphics card aswell. Do you do any gaming?
