when you first get the psp and turn it on in the menus you have a moving background of simple lines moving up and down like waves

the "waves" file must be stored in each firmware update, cos when if i set my waves to one colour then load devhook i can set a different colour for the waves and it wont affect my original ones in my 1.5 firmware, maybe we could find the file and change it, the animation is so smooth and the colour can be changed on it so easily its probably some form of flash animation - i.e not gif or AVI.

bmp aren't animated tho, and if you get devhook all the firmware files in data.psar have been extracted (data.psar is just an encrypted archive) so there should be a specific file with the background

that was what i was fixing to say...i didn't mean to say DATA.PSP.
Anyway yeah there is a specific file on there, but if someone could get into it then we would be going in the right direction.
but i never could open it...so it doesn't really matter.

oh i see, sorry codeman the them does have a bmp background but the actual waves must run as a layer on top. so if you edit the background bmp, you could have the waves moving over a custom bmp - i spose gonna have a play.

lol the bmp's are tiny so when you draw on them it really stretches it on the psp screen but it works so can have waves on top of custom background.
**Update**
If you change the resolution of the bmp it still works so you could use the psps full res - 480x272 and have photos etc.... behind the waves

if you have devhook and you've got the extracted firmware on there. Go onto the memstick and look in folder "dh\271\flash0\vsh\resource" there are files 1.bmp, 2.bmp, 3.bmp... upto 12.bmp these represent the colours to go behind the waves, if you open one for example 12.bmp (red) you can resize it using paint shop pro (or any other graphics editor) to 480x272 pixels and put any image on there, as long as you save it as 12.bmp (24-bit bitmap) again when you finish.
If you then load Devhook and change the them to red it will load your custom .bmp
I havent managed to change the waves yet tho

To remove the azura effect, (waves) you need flashmod. Also, the azura effect is not a .bmp and it's not in the DATA.PSAR. And you can't use 480 x 272 pics to replace the stock pics as you will screw up the XMB icons. Use 300 x 170 and you'll be fine. Unless you're trying to change the stock wallpapers in 2.60/2.71 emu; that won't work. I've already tried it even WITH 300 x 170. It's screws up the icons anyway.
Hope this helps.

lol found that out background was bright white, after sitting there for 10 mins and narrowing it down i found out the max res is 239 x 128 which still lets you see all xmb icons etc...
