Hi all, I'm looking for a recommended software for converting .asf file to .avi I do see some other users posts similar to mine but I havn't seen any answers yet.
Thanks

Just an update on this if anyone can help me.
Basically I have a samsung camcorder that uses cassettes but the software with the camcorder allows you stream the data through usb.
So I installed the software, media 5.1 that came with the camcorder.
So I have no problems transfering the data from my camcorder to the pc.
I save the recorded file to my desk top which is a .asf file.
This is where the problem starts!
I want to put these .asf files on dvd so I know I need a converter.
I tried ConvertXtodvd, no luck, it says error cannot continue.
So I downloaded boilsoft asf converter and when I import the .asf file I want to convert, it say's " this programe has incountered an error and must close". I also tried super dvd creator, it gets stuck when it tries to open the file.
I've tried searching the web and downloading different codecs and direct x, so I don't know what else to do really.
The .asf fileswhich I have saved do play on my windows media player with good quality and sound.
IIRC, ASF is a container for Windows Media compressed video. Nero recode/nerovision should be able to tackle this, provided you have the Windows Media codecs installed. Winavi might work too.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
In tried winavi also. Still no luck.
As soon as any programme opens up the asf file the programme crashes.
I'm just about to give up!
I tried loads of different codecs and programmes.
Some programmes can actually play the file before converting and yes they play it fine, but as soon as you hit convert, the programme crashes
I've used the latest versions of all the software I've used.
Advanced X video converter, as soon as it opens the file it says "preparing file for converting", but it just stays like that. Once again it crashes.
I even downloaded the XviDcodec from their website.
Strange the way the file can be played in the windows media player but can't be converted.
I can tell you, I've had many a problem with software/encoding/ tools ect... in the past but most of the time I've found answers even if I couldn't complete the task I set out to do but this is just pis*ing me off totally.
I just can't figure why it won't convert when it plays fine in my media player and in the VLC player also!
