MPG file same as MPEG? MPG Won't play on DVD.

I just got a file that is called mpg and it won't play on my APEX DVD player. I know that mpeg files will play with no problem, but this is the first time I had a mpg file. I was wondering if there is a difference between the two? Also, does anyone know any file conversion files for mpg to mpeg? Any help on this would be greatly appriciated

I really dont think there is any difference at all! Maybe one just cant be read by the dvd player due to birate or something! Are you encoding to vcd and playing or just throwing mpg files on cd and playing them?
