Hey guys, first let me say that I'm new to all of this, brand new. So if I sound like a complete fucking retard it's because I totally am.
So I just learned how to burn dvd's (thank you, thank you) using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and all that. But what I'm trying to do is rip the dvd on my hardrive, compress it, and then make it a torrent.
I have the full movie on my computer from DVD Shrink when I burned it. But it's 4 gigs. So I opened it up and took out the 3 VOB files to make up the movie and it's still 2.9 gigs. So I dled about a million different compressors and converters to try and resisze the VOB's but nothing will work, or the progs aren't full cause you have to pay.
But I'm not even sure if THATS what I'm supposed to do.
Can someone give me or show me a blonde, step-by-step guide to make a torrent, and get it compressed to the "dvd rips" they have on there that are only like 700-800mb?
I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, like I said I'm learning. Thank you :)
Well, first of all, if you deleted the VOBs you deleted the movie, or at least large portions of it or some extras. I'm not super-familiar with DVDShrink but here's the deal:
If the movie came on a DVD-9 (i.e. too big to fit onto a normal DVD) then you will of course have to shrink it to fit on a DVD-5 i.e. 4.7 GB. Most if not all shrinking programs won't go any lower than that as they are designed to fit stuff onto a single-layer DVD-5. My suggestion if you have the original movie (I hope this is not copyrighted material!) is to re-rip and this time cut as much out as possible except the original movie i.e. no extras as this will result in the least quality loss. Then use something like SimpleDivx (using the XviDcodec however, at a bitrate of 2100Kbps). This will give you a video file with the quality of the shrunk DVD in a file half the size i.e. about 2.2 GB. The problem with this, however, is that it won't be DVD-compatible, though it will play in DVD players that support DivX and, of course, PCs with the proper codecs installed.
I don't know much about DVD-Decrypter and nothing about torrents, but here's how to make an xvid:
Download SimpleDivx from simpledivx.org. Be careful downloading it and be SURE you download the latest version. The site sometimes has a confusing download page.
Also download the latest XviDcodec from XviD.org if you don't have it. BTW if you have some codec pack installed or the like you may already have this.
Install SD then run it. There should be 9 items along the top. You will be in the first one called 1. Input. Browse to your DVD. You can tinker with IFO selections but usually it's easiest to select Main Movie.
2. Under the Video tab, check that Source Format is Video and Custom Output Format is set to Original.
3. Under Audio check that Create Audio and Check Audio are checked, that the Format radio button is set to MP3 (this will give you a smaller file size) and Samplerate Conversion is set to 48000 Hz.
4. Under codec select Create a 2-pass file with Mp3 audio. Below that under codec Options select XviD. Under Pass Options select Do Both Passes.
5. Under Compression select Enter bitrate and under bitrate select 2100 Kbps (or whatever minimum it takes to get a rating of Very Good Quality). This is probably the most important setting.
6. Under Misc look under Container Format and select AVI. This is important for compatibility reasons.
7. Under Project you can select an output directory and file splitting options, as well as batch options.
8. Under Output you would normally start everything going but hold on a sec...
9. Under Setup you can set priorities if you need to use your computer while encoding. I've found that changing priorities doesn't work and that you had best let SimpleDivx run overnight.
Ok, now you can start the conversion process.
One caveat about SD: If you have it selected to split the final movie, sometimes it "forgets" or aborts. The converted movie will be in whatever temporary directory was set under 7. Project. It will be unsplit but usually it will be a complete conversion. I think this is a bug that hasn't been fully fixed yet.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
Thank you SO much for taking the time to write me a little guide, Dunker. You're a sweetheart.
I'm having a problem though.
I followed everything exactly like you said and each time I do it, I end up making a 1 second file, like 48 kb. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is I might be screwing up the imput setting. It's the only part I wasn't really sure of.
when I click on my movie in my drive 4 different files come up under it. "audio_ts" "common" "video_ts" and "win" I always just clicked the video_ts and then "select main movie" is this wrong? if so, whats the right way. And if thats fine, what else could be causing this? thank you in advance if you answer :P
Click on VIDEO_TS. That's where DVD files are always stored. Then select "Main Movie". Look at the movie length. If it seems right, that's what you should encode. If not, look under Choose Title and select another title until you find the one that corresponds to what you want to encode. That should take care of it.
