Hi, I'm having trouble forwarding ports on my PC to fully enable uTorrent. It's working but I'm getting downloads in the 5-20kb/s range, with some spikes both higher and lower.
I originally posted this at the end of a similar, but very long thread. Thought I'd get a much better response here.
I've tried everything...everything to get this to work. I was recently told that if I enabled DMZ that would allow the speed to spike. No such luck, apparently. I've also been told to increase the DCHP lease time to 7+ daysif the static IP thing is not working out.
The port I'm trying to use is: 32459
The IP Address of my desktop computer is: 192.168.2.101
My wireless router: Linksys WRT54Gv5 (4 port with wireless)
My ISP is Verizon DSL
2 Firewalls: Windows XP and McAfee
My network consists of 1 other laptop connecting wirelessly and using a VPN (which has its own "connection" under Control Panel/Network Connections) to allow me to log into my remote corporate network.
SETTING UP A STATIC IP Start-Control Panel-Network Connections
I have three connections all of which are listed as "connected":
* Local Area Network: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Ethernet Controller
* 1394 Connection: 1394 Net Adapter
* 1392 Connection 2: 1394 Net Adapter 2
I selected "Local Area Network" and selected "Use the Following IP Address"
IP Address: 192.168.2.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
SETTING UP PORT FORWARDING IN UTORRENT
Options-Preferences-Connection
Change port to 32459
Uncheck box "Enable UPnP Port Mapping"
SETTING UP PORT FORWARDING ON LINKSYS ROUTER
go to 192.168.2.1, enter user name and password. Go to "Applications and Gaming" tab.
Utor1 Start: 32459 End: 32459 Protocol: Both (TCP and UDP) IP Address: 192.168.2.101 Enable Box: Checked
firewall ISSUES:
Windows firewall Start-Control Panel-Windows firewall then click "Exceptions Tab"
uTorrent is listed as an exception and I have also clicked "Add Port" then used the Name: utorrent and Port: 32459 as exceptions for both UDP and TCP.
uTorrent is listed under the "Allow Full Access" on the Internet Applications list.
I also manually entered the port configuration and opened up incoming and outgoing TCP/IP and UDP ports with the 32459 port and used the description utorrent.
So when I run the speed test, I get a response similar to others on this forum saying that port 32459 does not appear to be open. I'm currently getting download speeds of around 20kb/sec although that will sometimes go much faster or slower. I'd really appreciate any help I can get to configure the system.
The one thing I'm kind of confused about now is the "1394 connections". I believe that's VPN, although I'm not sure if I have to set those to static IP as well.
I am seeing red and or yellow on uTorrent. I've disabled both Windows firewall and McAfee firewall and have seen no improvement. My current torrent download has 30(779) seeds and 46(1646) peers, and I'm getting around 20kB/sec downloads and 45kB/sc uploads. When I'm at low seed counts, I'm down in the 4-7kB/sec range.
1. 2 firewalls together equals 1 bad thing. Drop one of them, either of them, preferably windows.
2. Don't bother with a static IP, not sure who's bright idea it was to start recommending that, but it makes WAY too much trouble in the long end. The routers primary JOB is to do DHCP, so let it.
What else...lemme think. VPN is a pain in the butt for p2p, so...yea, yuck, I'd avoid using p2p on the laptop.
What else...oh...1394 is firewire, not LAN.
uTorrent has a port checker, or you can use shieldsup.com
My suggestions, in order....
1. Disable the winblows firewall all together, retry.
2. Check your ports AGAIN, use the built in listener in uTorrent or visit shieldsup.com to test to see if the port is actually open.
3. If it still doesn't work, disable both firewalls entirely.
Report back if that doesn't work. I have a "diagnose your own torrent issue" tutorial, but I haven't posted it yet, I guess I should.
Oh, also, visit my site, the second link in my sig, and read the "Speed up my torrent" tutorial...all the way through.
I have disabled Windows firewall, and have kept it disabled for a while. Still, I wanted to set it up so it's OK if that firewall is accidentially turned on.
Personally I think it's the VPN stuff. When I'm on websites for example, on my desktop machine (which does not have VPN) on the bottom it will say things like "transferring data from mycompany.yahoo.com" and "mycompany" is hte actual name of the company I work for. Not a good sign.
