is your slim ps2 already modded? (swap magic or modchip) you may want to look into getting a laser fix for your slim ps2. they overheat extremly fast even playing normal games. also as long as you use good media, your laser should be fine.

check here for best media http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240341

it's true dvd media will wear out the laser faster but if you use good media then the difference between the wear that an original does and a backup does isn't very big.

NTSC DNAS threads.

I dont think that you need a laser fix for the slimline if you are using swap magic. You only need a laser fix if you have a mod chip installed in your v12 slimline, because the laser coils are not of very high quality, and sometimes the voltage being sent to the laser gets too high, and because of the the laser burns out, the laser fix resolves this issue. Swap magic doesnt change the amount of voltage or anything so it isnt a problem.

a laser fix in any V12 is not a bad idea. Plenty of the lasers burned out on people who did not have mod chips, but it was only the first few batches of them that were released.

If you have a burner that can booktype a DVD+R to DVD-Rom, and you use top quality media then the difference between the original and the back up will be very slight and your laser will be just fine. I have had my V7 for a few years now and no problems.

But you have to research how you want to mod your system before you worry about learning to back up games. Because without the mod you can back them up all you want but will not be able to play them.
