Well if you can i would... IMO get 2 x 512mb running in dual channel. Then another 1 gig stick!

That for me would be the perfect setup. However personally im running 4 x 512mb and no problems. Damn fast!!

Hey thanks guys for the advices.Damm!I just check the prices of these memory over here and the prices keep on climbing!I can get two sticks of 512MB for a little less than 1 stick of 1GB.I think i'm gonna get the two sticks of 512MB.Actually mc pc has only two slots for memory but there's a great possibility that i'll upgrade it,putting a better cpu,motherboard,etc...,then maybe i'll take one motherboard which has 4 slots and then i can add two more 512MB to those i'm gonna buy now,and will get in total around 2Gbs.What do you think guys?

I was thinking about the same thing as you ddp,but unfortunately the price for the 1Gb stick has gone up,but i can still get the 512 stick at older price.

And does anyone know about the performance in all that?I mean does 4 sticks of 512MB will be better than 2 sticks of 1Gb?And has anyone here ever upgraded from 1 Gb of memory to 2 Gb and see a big difference in speed and performance gain?I know that the gain from a 512 to 1 Gb memory is quite significant but i don't know about the 1 Gb to 2 Gb?

I know it's quite a lot questions but really i know you guys are very well experienced about computer stuffs and was hoping that maybe you can help me on that.

Thanks in advance.

Vincent.

2gb is argubaly should be the most on your pc. Above that at the moment is stupid. That is of course your a vista fan then when that comes up 2gb may even be the norm!

But what im saying very longwindedly (Sorry) is.

1gb should do you just fine unless your a hardcore gamer!

It would help to know the board CPU and chipset you are using to make a definative answer, as your question is not as easy to answer as you probably think it is.

Regardless of the amount of memory you install.
2 sticks running in dual channel mode are usually faster than 4 sticks, as the CPU does not have to search through 4x sticks it will only have to search through 2x sticks.

If using an AMD CPU then the difference could be as much as a 5-10% drop as you can't use the 1T timing, it will need to drop to 2T, and certain AMD CPUs with the 130nm cores will drop the speed down from 400 to 333MHz.

Basically if you need 2GB of RAM get 2x1GB, if you don't then just get 2x 512KB.
Usually the smaller sized RAM modules have tighter timings as well which increases the speed, getting larger modules with Low Latency timings is very expensive.
