Is there anyway to make a legal copy of a store purchased DVD? Such as if you wanted to take your dvd that you bought and put it on your ipod is there any legal way of doing this without taking the copy protection off and violating the laws in the US. Thanks a lot

Depends on who you ask. Ask th MPAA RIAA or any other media/movie/music association then no there is not.

According to the Copyright Act yes.

According to the DMCA no.

it's one big murky mess.

As long as you don't do it with the intent to sell (though the "new" FBI warnings on movies say even if you do it without monetary gain)

Look it like this. If you make a copy for your own personal use, as long as you aren't downloading the file over the net where it could be tracked, no one is going to bother you. No one is going to spend the time money or effort to track down every person that makes a copy on their hard disk. As long as your house doesn't get raided for something else like drugs prostitutes or kiddie porn, where your hard drive could be siezed and they found all these movies on it, then no you should be fine.

I burn and make backups of all my movies, way i see it it is in my house and i own it. As long as it stays within the confines of my home or on my person, nobody should say anything. IMO

Resistance is futile....
DVD's will be assimilated...
Protection is irrelevant.
