I am looking for a good program to edit GIF files (and make new ones too, obviously). It should have a friendly GUI, good features and a good detailed offline help system explaining all the functions.

To give you an idea, the interface should be something like Photoshop (non recource-hungry, non cluttered, versatile, highly customizable, decent looking etc.)

Also the regular stuff, such as not too many bugs, easy online updating etc.

Try The Gimp, it should be perfect for you.

Adobe Photoshop 7 should be ok too, not buggy or resource hungry in my experience with it...unlike PS CS2 :(

Theres plenty of alteratives ashwin18, Macromedia Fireworks etc, but make sure to try out The Gimp:

Tell me what you think :)

OL, I'll download it. BTW, which is the latest version? 2.2.12 or 2.2.9? I'm a little confused about the decimal crap.
And can Photoshop edit -all- the images in an animated GIF sequence? And can it set a time interval to display the next image?
Thanks anyway. Sorry for being such a bother.

hehe animated gifs are yesterdays news...convert those vids to shockwave files or one of the new internet-friendly formats.

At least, that's what I was going to do, but what do I know about publishing?

I really don't have time to learn shockwave now. Images are much simpler (in terms of learning time). Although I might do a course on shockwave later. Wondering where I can find an e-book on shockwave...

More like "I wonder if I can find a program that automatically converts an avi/mpg/mpeg/mov/rm to shockwave?" Presto! Dozens to choose from.

I'm not making fun of ya feller, please don't think so. I'm one of those old fogies and for me, animated gifs are more irritation that attraction. They are why I can't FRIGGIN STAND myspace. :)
