So my AVI files no longer play on my computer. It only throws up a blue screen, no matter which player I use. I have installed NOTHING new in the past couple of months and this just started 2 days ago for no reason at all. The wierd thing is though that when I'm editing video in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 the AVI files I capture from DV tape play fine. But AVI files I've had on my hardrive that I try to play in WMP or Real Player just throw up the blue screen. Anybody got any ideas? I had a similar problem once before and I fixed it somehow.

Here is a list of codecs I have installed:
Cinepak codec by Radius
Intel Indeo Video R3.2
IntelYUV codec
Microsoft RLE
Microsoft Video 1
Microsoft YUV
Toshiba YUV codec
Microsoft H.263 Video codec
Microsoft H.261 Video codec
CineForm HD codec V2.5
Logitech Video (I420)
DivX 5.2.0 codec

Download the program GSpot at this site.

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/gspot252dl.html

Once you have the program running, go to system menu and click list codecs and other filters. Anything you see highlighted in red is either a problematic codec or filter. Right click and select copy line to clipboard as text. Paste the results here.

Edit: Download the latest version of DivX codec 6.25 (Play) first before using GSpot. Hopefully that should fix the problem if at all.

I've got a few different downloads of James Blunts, "You're Beautiful" (radio clean version) but whatever codec they used I don't know. Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime, & Roxy Audio Central Player. none of these will play it. I don't understand about codecs and would like to know how one finds out what codec is used to make a file, and how do I go about getting the correct codes.
I would appreciate any help.

As BlinkN said, get GSpot and open your file in it. That will tell you if the correct codec is installed and what it is. To find it just google or install the Kazaa Lite (full) codec pack from here:http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm That will give you every codec you need but, if you use it, uninstall any other codecs as they can conflict. This pack already contains GSpot but you can choose what you wish to install.
