I got my PS2 just couple monts ago. I downloded "Formula 1 2006" in PAL format from internet as an ISO file and followed the instructions from some of these forums - but is didn't wotk.
This is what I did:
I patched the "FORMULA_1_2006_PAL.ISO" with "ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix.exe" and when it finished, it said "FILE SUCSESSFULY PATCHED".
Then I opened the DVD Decrypter and took the Formula1_2006.ISO as a SOURCE and as Destination I put my DVD BURNER. When the
burning finished and I inserted the burned DVD into the PS2 - It didn't work!!!
I don't know why - does anyone of you guys know what I'm missing? As I said earlier, the PS2 is new - do I need to have any Chips installed or anything like that in the PS2 it self or???..I'm confused!
I would really appreciate a quick and step by stem reply (just
to make sure that I wouldn't miss a step).
Greateful in advance - Dan.

Please read the stickies at the top of the forum next time.

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.
Guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/367906

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Maxell High Grade (DVD+R's). The PS2 laser is picky, these are the only three types of media you should trust for maximum reliability and compatibility with your PS2. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544
If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.

3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes- You cannot boot PS2 backups without a modification, either a software mod or hardware mod!!! Do not ask about this in the forums!!!

You need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or
HD Advance: http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_how-to-use.htm

Tnx for the quick reply. OK, as I understand: Once I get let's say swap magic, do I need to get an External Hard Drive and then install the swap magic in order to load games through the Swap Magic? I was hopping if there is any way to make the games work only with Burned DVDs (without HD). What do you think?

Yes you can use Swap Magic to boot backups or a modchip. A modchip costs more, but is the best all around solution. It will boot backups just like originals, insert and play, no swapping or case mod is required. Swap Magic requires a case mod and a swap to play backups. You can get a quality chip for $115 (installation+chip+shipping). Swap Magic with a case mod is around $30, but you'll have to rebuild games, swap discs each time, shrink Dual Layer (DVD-9) to single layer (DVD-5).

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1.
Read My ModChip FAQ: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/304534

7. Q. What do I need to use Swap Magic?
A. With fat PS2 v.1-11: Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm
Slide Card: http://www.saveware.com/SlideCardUsageAndInstall.htm
With Slim PS2 v.12-14
Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm
Magickeys (also referred to as slide tool, slim tool or, magic switch): http://magickeys.net/
Ghost Switch: http://www.saveware.com/GhostSwitchInstall.htm
Tape and Tissue mod: From Pretense: If the fliptop doesn't work, just give up on it and do a tape and tissue mod. Open up your case again and tape the back sensor (toward the upper left and beneath the hinge part of the lid) with duct tape or even regular Scotch tape (I use several layers to be on the safe side), put the case back together, and stuff a small ball of tissue into the hole for the front sensor (lower right just above the power button).
Pics (Thanks to PSPness): http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm
my tape and more tape

Just about the same, just a change on Censor 'A' and Censor 'B'

Censor B - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/572/dsc010703xc.jpg
keep the top closed, while you tape down the disk stopper, using a few layers of duct tape
Fur
Censor A - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/4342/dsc010698we.jpg
use tiny strips of duct tape to patch over the tiny censor. I used a screwdriver to help put on the tape.

I did the same thing except I have HD Advance with the PS2 network drive and a hard drive attached.

I patched F1 2005 with ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix.exe and uploaded the game and it worked perfectly with the exception of the opening movie sound studdering (probably due to the PAL / NTSC timing.

I recently patched F1 2006 with ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix.exe and also uploaded and the video worked perfectly but the audio is acting strange. Some of the sounds are incorrect and not working properly. Any ideas?

Dan let me know your results when you are able to play the game.

Have you tried all the modes? Could just be a compatibility issue. I don't know how patching a game from PAL2NTSC would affect HD Loader, if at all.

Thanks Tokijin, it's likely a HD Advance issue... I'm going to try running the game from a DVD burn and see how it goes...

Yeah that could at least eliminate some options. That's all this stuff is, trial and error. Check out the compatibility lists. Sorry I can't be more help, HD stuff isn't my specialty.

4. Q. Is game X compatible with HD Advance or HD Loader?
A. HD Loader: http://list.ps2hd.com/
HD Advance: http://forum.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_compatibility.asp
