the best way is to not do it at all, peerguardian and all the others are fine but they can get arrond it, so be safe don't start, not at all! i don't use filesharing programs, my children were using one and my system got all messed up with virus and spyware, also got a letter from my isp provider that my account was being looked at for iligal transfer of copyright matiral, so that was enough for this guy. also i was just giving my view ok?

hmmm.....i guess some people like me are never going to know what it's like to fileshare. maybe if i go to some distant place like ethiopia, i wont get touched by anyone. also, im in california, and its easier for them to find me there.

They can find you anywhere..Just be careful..Peerguardian, only accept peers from tracker..encryption on.. If you get really paranoid use a proxy.. That's what we all do. Theres always some risk, but you really need to either do heaps and heaps or stand out by uploading the newest films and music. These days I class it as "try before buy" If I like it I buy it and get rid of my "pirate" version. Read all the stuff in the p2p forums and on the private tracker sites. ;-)

Peerguardian 2 will do the job just fine,If you wan't to add an additional layer of security go ahead and use the proxy.I know next to nothing about linux so I can't comment on that.Whatever you do listen to anyone but rdmercer1(no offence).

me? i just complimented you guys for helping me. I only download things off a proxy now and when im using the internet, i use peer gaurdian. Is there any organization for enforcing copyright laws on games? like an MPAA for video games?

Hello, I was just reviewing this thread and I will tell you don't do it there is no protection. I use road runner and they emailed me to cease and desist it was my second warning for downloading copyrighted material. I also used peerguardian, and many other features I thought were protecting me what I gather is the file I was downloading had a tracker inside letting them know who was downloading it the movie was 13 Blocks. I have since stopped all p2p sharing, and deleted all content on my pc using a shredder to erase any evidence it has been 6 weeks and I hope no one comes after me it wasn't worth it I thought I was safe, I wasn't and I don't want to go to jail nor do I wan't to get fined. Bottom line it's just not worth it and I have also noticed some isp providers servers are making it hard to get to some torrent sites I used mininova.org primarily and when I got there just to see whats available I get error 505 messages when I click on a link. Be safe, Beware!!!!

@elliot - i think Road Runner is an ISP, yes ?. if so they'll have picked you out as (i think) p2p uses certain ports, so it'll have been easy to spot for the ISP i mean). The ISP's all seem preoccupied with greed and throttling p2p usage down is a fantastic way for them to screw you over; they're all at that now, yet they label it as 'providing better service' for other customers. that's absolute and utter bull, it's just greed, greed and more greed.

when i have my laptop, i just go to starbucks and download all i need. At least starbucks will be ok. i almost never use my own internet service to download. i just connect to a public wifi hotspot now. i cant be identified there. (i hope). Is that legal or bad?

Ok.thanks fiend. I wish I was in canada. Its legal to file share there. Is p2p illegal or is downloading copyrighted crap illagal? So if I were to make a modification to a halo 2 game (for example, put new skins, changed the maps, all that jazz) it would become my creation,right? And if I didn't put a copyright on it. It would be ok to share. (Please corect me if I'm wrong)
