I've been debating getting a laptop lately and there are two Acer Aspire models I've been looking at. On one hand there's the AS5004 with AMD Turion 64, 1gb of ram, and 1mb of L2 cache. On the other hand there's the AS5102 with AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50, 512mb of ram (if I get this one it will definitely have another 512 stick in it), and 2X256kb of L2 cache. The one with the dual-core is a bit cheaper than the other one, even if I add another 512 stick. Do you guys think I should get Turion 64 or go for the newly released dual-core with a smaller amount of L2 cache? Any and all opinions are welcome. Thanks.

It'll be used primarily for everyday/school stuff, but I do tend to run a lot of programs at once. Turion 64 is 1.8ghz and the dual-core is 1.6ghz.

my laptop is Turion64 with 1GB RAM, it's awesome, i use it primarily with a 64-bit Linux to (hopefully) get the most out of it. it's alos dual-booted with XP for those times when you unfortunately need to use XP

Yeah I'm definitely going to get an AMD Turion 64 with at least 1gb ram if not more. What kind of laptop do you have?

That's awesome. How much did that set you back? I'm looking for something in the $700-$800 price range with at least 1gb ram that's nice and small. What do you think about this one? http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5007578

cheers, i know :)
mine was £700, that was the limit i'd set myself, can't fault it at all, so much so that's my main PC now. gets quite warm so i bought something similar to this which sits under laptop, raises it up a little too - http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPO-Akasa_Akasa_Aluminium_Note_Book_Coo...

i'll have a look at that link now

edit- nice, and it looks to have the same Brightview screen as mine (awesome, very clear) and good choice on the 1GB ram, i wouldn't buy a laptop with less myself..

Is the cooling pad worth buying? I've read some reviews that said they don't help much.

I think I'm gonna get that one. Only thing bad about ordering from walmart is that you have to pay tax. I guess it's worth it.

mine has 2 fans underneath which seem to help. to be fair though i only bought it to raise the lappy up a little, the fans are a bonus (plus it has extra usb ports - well needed)

I see. I might have to invest in one, but hopefully not. I have one more question then I'll leave you alone. Is the brighview screen actually that much better then just a regular screen?

Thanks for all the info. If I have any laptop troubles (hopefully I won't) you'll be the first person I ask.

pretty low!, no way. i really can't remember when i bought it. i had £700 to play with and it was the best i could get for the money, that also had the spec i wanted; didn't want a real powerhouse, just something that would get the job done.
