this may seem really vague but in the pc im using now its has a socket 478 and i happen to have recieved a working 1.7ghz pentium 4. basically i dont have any documentation or info on either. does anyone no which proc would be faster? I know the celeron has the higher clock but i wasnt sure about the amount of cache and stuff like that.

Ahh id probably go for, i hate to say it, the celeron.

At that clock it will be plenty fast!

Yeah, i kinda figured that a 1ghz higher clock would most likely be better. But considering it was a Pentium 4 i just thought id check it out. thanks.

Hi PeaInAPod,
If both the P4 and the Celeron run FSB400 (100MHz) then you may be in luck - but they don't make Celerons with 27 multiplier do they?
I'm sure your Socket478 supports FSB533 (133MHz), most of them do. I bet the P4 will run @ 133 but that Celeron @ 27x would not.
However, if the P4 runs 100 x 17 and the Celeron runs 133 x 20, at the higher FSB the P4 will come up as P4 ~2266MHz.
Then you will have a choice! P4 2266 or Celeron 2700, both on FSB533.
Probably pretty similar performance actually...
I bet your P4 will do 2550MHz @ FSB600 (which is 150MHz x 17).
You must run CPU-Z...

Im assuming changing the multiplier and all that would be changed/accesed in the bios? right? if so im out of luck my computer has some no-name el-cheapo board and I cant do anything in my bios except arrange the boot order.

Not actually - every mobo is different but, typically there would be a jumper to set 100MHz (FSB400) vs. 133MHz (FSB533).
The CPU multipliers are all locked, for example the P4 @ 17x. If you can run the P4 at the faster FSB speed you will be good.
The Celeron should already be running 133MHz (FSB533)...?
What did CPU-Z tell you when you ran it?
