mpeg2 too large even after loaded in nero

When I load a file into Nero it has always shrunk it down enough so that even an mpeg2 that is over 830000 MB will fit on a cdr. Well, what do I do if Nero doesn't shrink it down enough and gives me a message that the media isn't large enough when I try to burn? The mpeg2 file wasn't any larger than others that have worked in the past, so this surpised me.
I have another unrelated question. I have an mpeg file that I thought was mpeg2 or mpeg1, but nero isn't recognizing it as either. How do I burn this file? Do I need to convert it, or just change a setting?
Any help is appreciated on both questions.
