Hi,

I know this sounds rather convoluted, but I was having such a hard time going from vhs to my computer, so I had a friend move all my vhs tapes to DVDs via one of those vhs to dvd combo vcrs. They turned out fine. Now I want to reorder them in chronological order and re-burn them, so what I did was rip the burned DVDs using DVDShrink, then put them together how I wanted them to play in Nero 7. On my computer, they look fine. The disc burns successfully, and the menus and chapters display correctly. But the major issue is the loss of quality - how does this happen? The pictures turn out very pixelated. As I said, it doesn't look anything like that on my computer.

Is there a different burning program I should be using? Is the loss of quality in fact happening during the ripping process and I'm not seeing it? I doubt that's the case - I've ripped other DVDs and re-burned them with no quality loss using DVDShrink. I attempted to burn them in Windows Movie Maker, but it keeps telling me I don't have the right codec to add mpeg files (!) and I can't figure out which one I need to download it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The actual discs I'm burning onto.... well, right now I'm using DVD RWs because I wanted to be sure that it worked correctly before I did it for real. The exact brand is FujiFilm DVD+RW (4.7 GB).

Pixelation is caused mainly by using poor quality discs and burning too fast, I recommend Top quality discs such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Sony (made in japan) and burning at a slow speed of 4X.

I wouldnt use the RW format if it your intention to keep the discs and NOT re use them, saves $$$$. If your playeaccepts the +R format, then stick to that however, having said that I use the -R format.

I tried it again at the very lowest burn speed, and there was a very very slight improvement. I used a Sony + RW. Any other ideas I might try in addition to the low burn speed?

I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but the DVDs that were created directly from the VHS tapes - they don't seem to play correctly on a DVD player (Sony PS2). The menu appears, but when you press play, the audio plays, but the picture does not. And after I burned the ripped files, they play correctly on the PS2 (except for the quality loss), but when I played it on my computer, the audio played, but the picture was scrambled. I have no idea what any of that means, but I thought I'd share.
