I just returned home from Iraq and have a pile of dvds I need to backup. That was pretty much the main entertainment where I was stationed. Needless to say I have a pile sitting here. Before I left I used DVD Decrypter. It appears thats no longer an option and with a new pc I was going to ask some advice on what to put on the new PC for my back up software. If I remember correctly DVD Shrink was pretty straight forward. Any suggestions?

pharoah25, you are a soldier right?
I dont like Iraq but I want to introduce something maybe useful to you.
If you want to backup dvds, I advise you to use sothink dvd easyworkshop: http://www.afterdawn.com/general/adprices.cfm And if you wanna rip dvds to your hard disk(AVI format), a dvd ripper will be a nice choice: http://www.afterdawn.com/general/adprices.cfm These two software are both trial versions, for free. Wish you have your pleasure with your dvds, and dont forget to tell me how was your everything going, I adore soldiers like you.

The best software and easiest to use is 1 CLICK DVD COPY PRO. As far as I know they dont sell it in stores but you can go to their website and download it. Their decryption technology is the best on the market and will decrypt ANY dvd, just try searching reviews on the web and you'll see. It will also compress the movie while burning it so you wont another program like DVD Shrink.

sam805236, I dont quite agree with you. I dont think something can be perfect enough to be "best", each product has its own special features. I had tested many kinds of dvd rippers, but which i kike best is sothink dvd ripper. It rip a dvd only needs 3 steps, and fewer time than others. You may compare all there features here: http://www.afterdawn.com/general/adprices.cfm

Have you tried 1 CLICK. I don't think so because it is only one step, thus the name 1 CLICK? I am not trying to get into an arguement here. Try a free demo for yourself @ http://www.lgsoftwareinnovations.com

pharoah25,
Hi and welcome to AD :)
Shrink is the second best transcoder out there, only recode 2 is better, but not by much.
For movies that Shrink can not handle I suggest using DVDFab Decrypter (free) this program will break all the latest movie encryptions while ripping the entire movie onto your HDD. Then use Shrink to compress and burn with your normal burning software.
EDIT: As you used DVDD before you might want have a look down the list for RipIt4Me.
DVDFab download: http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
DVDFab guide: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=51904
Here is a good list of how to back up your movies.
Here is the free way of making perfect backups:
1) DVDFab Decrypter - this wil break the movies encryption while ripping the movie to your HDD
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
2) VobBlanker - Not always needed, but it will get rid of any protection that DVDFD left behind. VobBlanker also allows you to blank, replace, cut and strip titles.
http://www.jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm
3) DVDShrink - this will allow you to compress the movie to fit onto a blank DVD-5 disc. Select your output as an ISO image
http://filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/
4) Imgburn - the best free burner around
http://www.imgburn.com/
Here are some guides:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=51904 DVDFab Decrypter guide
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154 DVDFab Decrypter and VobBlanker guide by Alkohol
http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/article_vobblanker_page1.html VobBlanker guide
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ Shrink guide
The other free option:
Use RipIt4Me. I do not know anything about ripit4me so I will leave you with the excellent guide by arniebear. You can also download it from the same link
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110
The other way $$$$$
AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie. All you have to do is start up AnyDVD and continue using your normal compression engine, whether it's shrink, recode or CloneDVD, It's that easy.
Before you pay for this excellent program you have a 21 day trial
http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
What else to do if the above does not work:
1) Update your dvdwriters firmware
2) Invest in good quality media Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims are best
3) Burn @4x
4) Check your dvd's for dirt, scratches
5) clean your dvd
If your dvd still does not back up, you most properbly have a badly authord dvd, so your only option is to exchange it.

@Pharoah25
I was recently burned by the company that makes 1Click DVD Copy and would definetely not recommend using their product(s). Im not saying this out of scorn but I was cheated. For free options It is very simple. . .
DVD Rippers:
DVDFab Decrypter: Updated fairly regularly and can rip movies with the newer/more complex protection schemes. But can only rip the whole movie. Not really a con but it takes more time.
RipIt4Me: Many have had good luck with this program. To run this program you will also need DVD Decrypter and FixVTS. I can help you obtain both of these programs.
DVD "Shrinkers":
DVD Shrink: Its still the go to dvd shrinking application. Dependable and free. When using the program it will create a .iso file for which one of the following applications to burn.
Burning Software:
DVD Decrypter: Besides just ripping movies DVD Decrypter can also burn .iso files but the program is no longer updated. Still dependable but will eventuallybecome outdated.
ImgBurn: After DVD Decrypter was deemed illegal and bought from its creator. That same person created ImgBurn. It is the burning half of DVD Decrypter. ImgBurn has a better burning engine and support for more drives. Either DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn can burn the .iso which one you use is just personal preference.
Now if you want to spend a little money. The program(s) that most anyone here at afterdawn will recommend to you is CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD available as 21 day trials at slysoft.com. They cost $39 dollars as a package deal. This price includes both AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 and FREE updates for both programs forever. As for the aformentioned 1Click DVD Copy program, it costs $59 and recently the company started charging a yearly $20 license renewal fee. And to use 1Click you still need a program like AnyDVD to get around the protection. Any way AnyDVD is a driver that can "unprotect" any dvd (hence the name) and is very dependable and updated regularly to defeat the newest dvd protection schemes. CloneDVD2 is a DVD copying program. But to make the program legal it can not backup protected DVD's,thats were AnyDVD comes into play. CloneDVD2 can copy just the main movie or if you want it can copy the whole movie. And it does so with aplomb.
(if you cant find the setup files for DVD Decrypter being as its been taken down from many sites I upload them and give you the link to download.) any more questions feel free to ask. Heres why I dont recommend 1Click DVD Copy . . .

The last version of DVD Decrypter can be download here:

I just wanted to remind you that AnyDVD alone can NOT copy movies. It can "unprotect" the DVD Disc so you can copy it. The best program to use to copy the movie(s) is CloneDVD2 which is made by the same company as AnyDVD. they work great together and when they are used together they will never dissapoint.

Yeah they sure do pharoah25. Thats why so many people in these forums recommend them. Im glad it worked for you and have a good time burning those movies. Dont forget stay away from crappy media. If you buy DVD+/-R at the stores stick with Verbatim they will be your best bet for top quality discs. Others like Fujifilm may also be "premium" discs but you have to check labels and the country of production. Verbatim guarentees a quality burn that will last.

pharoah25 , really all you neeed is CloneDVD 2 and AnyDVD.the programs update ,you can do all the newer movies(i never had a movie i cant backup with this combo) you can control the burn speed(always burn at 4x or no faster than 8x) and you can re-author the dvd(doing the movie only). its the best program out there heres the link you can download both and use the free 21 day trial before you buy.
http://www.slysoft.com/en/
and a guide to use the program (its very easy)
http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/
remember to use good blank media (taiyo yuden and or verbatim) and burn at 4x starting out on a clean machine without other programs running in the background and the lastest firmware on your drive.
