Well; some may have seen that I had a thread awhile ago talking about what is a good brand name computer to upgrade around; and I did my research and agree that there is no such thing as a brand name upgradable computer.....

so; since my main goal was to have a computer where I could sort of switch out the parts; I went to tiger direct and found this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details....

So; I was just wondering what you guys think of this as a good thing to start me out....

P.S. Since I'm kind of a newb at computer hardware;;;let me know if this 'barebones' pc is missing anything I need to have a functional setup......I know one thing missing is a Vid Card;)

Also; my budget for OS; monitor; and tower unit are about $500-600 dollar range; preferably 500 though:)

Remember; if you see stuff that isn't included w/ this barebones unit that you need in order to have a functional PC; let me know.....because
I can bet you that I'm missing plenty of stuff.........

TIA;

Hi there,

That actually looks like a really decent deal. Got the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherbaord myself - very nice. I'd suggest maybe get a gig of RAM rather than the 512 offered to do the system justice.

All your missing is the Vid card as you say. (and monitor keybaord mouse obviously)

It is possible to obtain your OS for..eh...cheap if you know what i mean.

All in all looks a good deal.

Cheers,

No need to spend money on an OS. Run Linux.....all free, and open source. Find a distribution that you like (www.distrowatch.com) and download and install. Will do anything a Windows box can (except crash) and a whole lot more. Be prepared for a bit of a learning curve though.

Hey Guys; thanx for the replies;;;

@haimback
thanx; and thats what I planned on doing was getting the 1 or 2 GB of RAM when I had the money;

and;
what do you all reccomend for a vid card then; if thats all I need....

Oh yeah;

and for other stuff;

what do you guys recomend as a good monitor for me??

P.S. Any other recomendations; Please; I am all ears.....
and as for HDD; is it possible to put just the OS on one hdd and your personal files on the other?? (that way my files aren't cluttered together and I know where everything is)

P.S.P.S.

also; if ur wondering; I'll be using this computer mostly for broadband internet; dvd backup; and moderate gaming use...
In the end; I'll upgrade it to:
AMD Dual Core cpu
10K gaming hdd
gfx card upgrade (2 of them) so I can run in SLI

Lastly; do you know if this is and OC'able unit?? If so; what do you reccomend for cooling system for when I'm ready to OC?

Remember; anything I'm missing; please let me know;;
(fyi; i've already got a mouse and keyboard)

One more thing; as for an OS; what's the difference between OEM and Retail?? I think I read somewhere where retail was only an upgrade and you needed a previous version of windows to install it; and an OEM was a clean install for computers w/o and OS (like the one im gettin')??

And; what do you guys rate this as as far as upgradability and bang-for-your buck????

THANK YOU!!!!! i thing i've finally found my future 'frankenstein' comp!!!
