I've been burning dvds using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter together. For the past year everything has been working fine, until now. Normally i was burning at a 4x rate, but all of the sudden the burn rate never passes .6x. I also always get an error for a cyclic redundancy check around 98/99% completion, and sometimes before like around 50%. I've tried using many different dvd titles so i don't think bad encoding or dirty dvds are the problem. I'm also using the same high quality blank DVD-Rs that i always have.

So does anyone know how to fix this problem? and if not do any of you know if the problem lies with my CPU or my dvd burner. Thanks.

Make sure the transfer mode on your drive is set to DMA.

You will need to go into your device manager.

for windows xp

Goto my computer, view system information, hardware, device manager,IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, double click on primary IDE channel and select advanced then do the same for secondary IDE channel.

If they say PIO change them to DMA. Here is how http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

Your DVDWriter and your HDD

what is DMA?
Short for direct memory access, a technique for transferring data from main memory to a device without passing it through the CPU. Computers that have DMA channels can transfer data to and from devices much more quickly than computers without a DMA channel can. This is useful for making quick backups and for real-time applications.

EDIT:

Shrink can not handle the latest movie encryptions because it is no longer updated, and it never will be.

This is what to do if you are having trouble backing up your movies:

Here is the free way of making perfect backups:

1) DVDFab Decrypter - this wil break the movies encryption while ripping the movie to your HDD

http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

2) VobBlanker - Not always needed, but it will get rid of any protection that DVDFD left behind. VobBlanker also allows you to blank, replace, cut and strip titles.

http://www.jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

3) DVDShrink - this will allow you to compress the movie to fit onto a blank DVD-5 disc. Select your output as an ISO image

http://filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/

4) Imgburn - the best free burner around

http://www.imgburn.com/

Here are some guides:

The other free option:

RipIt4Me. I do not know anything about ripit4me so I will leave you with the excellent guide by arniebear. You can also download RipIt4Me from the same link.

The other way $$$$$

AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie. All you have to do is start up AnyDVD and continue using your normal compression engine, whether it's shrink, recode or CloneDVD, It's that easy.

Before you pay for this excellent program you have a 21 day trial

What else to do to insure good quality back ups:

1) Update your dvdwriters firmware

2) Invest in good quality media Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims are best. Also look out for Maxell,Sony,Fuji, MIJ's (made in Japan) these are also extremely good blank media.

3) Burn @4x is a good place to start

Wow, thanks for the help. I'll be using the new software for now on.

But when I tried to change the primary and secondary channel to DMA if available, the drives still operate in PIO mode. Does this just mean that i bought a low quality external DVD burner that can't operate in DMA mode? Thanks.

What is the make of your DVDWriter and are you running windows xp?

If you are running xp uninstall your DVDWriter that might help, dont worry because xp will automatically install it for you when the computer has booted up.

Also when you install DVDFab Decrypter for the first time it will ask do you want to enable DMA, select yes and it will do it for you.

This may also help you.

I am running windows xp. The dvd writer that I have is an I/O Magic writer ( http://www.iomagic.com/Products/show_all_results.asp?ProdID=IDVD8DBE ). I don't know how to uninstall the DVD writer, which I think means the actual external drive.

I was looking at some other websites and found this page which says that I can enable DMA by hacking the registry. I'm hesitant to try it for fear of messing up my computer more than it already is. What do you all think of this idea? Here's the page http://sniptools.com/tipstricks/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp

thanks again.

You have an external drive and DMA does not apply to externals only internal drives. How about you check and make sure your firmware is up to date on the burner.

Thanks for the help. I uninstalled the IDE drivers and that fixed the problem. They now work in DMA mode and my external burner is again writing at top speed with no errors in my past 10 attempts.

However now my Windows Media Player is not working. My computer freezes up whenever i open the program. Also when i tried to reinstall the media player the IDE settings automatically go back to PIO mode and i have to reinstall these devices again. Does anyone know why windows media player is acting this way?
