I just had a quick question. I'm thinking of purchasing a USB 2.0 external hard drive, has anyone ever had any problems making backups using an external drive?

Does it slow the process down much?

Thanks!

Firewire, IEEE 1394, is faster and uses less cpu.

Figure your drives are moving at about 45+MB/sec. Firewire at 35MB/sec and USB at 25MB/sec.

I bought a lightscrive BenQ 1655 in a Galaxy external case:

http://www.meritline.com/combo-benq-dw1655-and-galaxy-5-25-enclos...

the burner worked great! right from the box! but the drive wasn't recognized as a lightscribe burner so I couldn't use that feature. Then I found out it was a registry entry that wasn't set properly by Windows...... before I found that out I sent it back to Meritline.com! I'm still waiting to get it back and try it out again. I just got email telling me that the drive will be here by Wednesday of this coming week.... they send it ground!

The burns came out great! and I expect even better results as it learns write strategies from the QSuits program that you download from the BenQ site! here are some burn quality scans for you from that burner:

and I used a firewire and got great times for those burns too! I know it's faster and better than my Philips 8631 (which is a rebadged BenQ 1620!). That's why I got the real thing.... I know I'll enjoy this baby!

No and no. However, the term "ever" is pretty broad and encompassing....

My cousin bought a new HP pc and an 80 gb HP external harddrive last spring. His pc had trouble with it.It worked perfect for both my pcs. I'd fill it up and take it over to his house. His brand new pc wouldn't do anything, despite trying all 7 of his usb ports. I put a 200 gb internal maxtor in that pc to help out his hd space.

Backing up movies onto an external hd:It took a few mins longer for the encoding. I could load that hd up in as little as couple hrs at max!!!!

1 thing I noticed,it slowed down both my pc's -that I kept swapping that drive on.Even with the external HD disconnected, they still ran slower.

A reformat took care of my backup pc. I'm holding off for my main pc.Slowed a little, but not enough to reformat yet.

boy am I getting old...... I'm sorry I got mixed up on the external thing..... and talked about my external DVD burner! I have a 100Gig external Maxtor Hard Drive. it's great..... I use it for backing up my computer only. It's fast and easy and never ever had a problem with it. It came with software for backing up.... no problems with external hard drive at all, and saved my butt plenty of times, too. Better than a restore point that's for sure!

I just bought the 100g Maxtor from BB for 60.00 USD. Plugged it in and it was ready to go, just used Acronis and did a clone of my HDD, works really great.

Well someone gave me a copy of Hiren's Boot Disk, which has a whole bunch of programs on it, some of which are scary, lol. So I played with Norton Ghost and the Symantec ImageMaker but decided Acronis was the easiest. Created the Clone of my HDD, so no more do I have to worry about putting anthing back it will all come back as is.....I am so happy :)
