Direct disc-2-disc copy is impossible, you need go through the hassle if you want to copy the DVD to DVD-R. First you need to rip the movie (SmartRipper or so), then you need to change it into "pure" MPEG-2 video and then use DVD authoring tool like SpruceUp in order to author the DVD and finally burn it to the DVD-R with burning software like Nero.

Obvisouly you need to have DVD-R burner if you want to have it in DVD-R format. Other option is of course to have it in VCD format which takes appx 2 CDs -- video quality is comparable to VHS. Most of the DVD players can play VCDs as well.

And for software:

SmartRipper:

DVD2AVI (to change DVD files into "regular" files that Windows can handle):
AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI.cfm ">http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI.cfm

TMPGEnc (to encode the video into DVD format -- this drops the quality slightly, but not much):
TMPGEnc.cfm ">http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/TMPGEnc.cfm

SpruceUP (for DVD authoring):
SpruceUp.cfm ">http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/SpruceUp.cfm

Nero (this one is commercial, you have to buy it in order to use it for DVD burning):

Some kind of guide for using these tools is in here -- it explains how to rip DVD into VCD, but you can modify it slightly (==don't downmix the audio with AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI, use DVD template with TMPGEnc and ignore the CD cutting part totally):

VCD = regular VCD.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">VideoCD, 99% of DVD players can play this, quality compares to VHS. VCD is encoded with MPEG-1 and one CD fits 74 minutes of video.

SVCD = SuperVideoCD, appx. 50-70% of DVD players can play this, quality compares to SVHS or so -- in between of VHS and DVD quality. SVCD is encoded with MPEG-2 (just like DVD) and one CD contains appx. 35-40 minutes of video.

XVCD = eXtendedVCD, not a "real" standard unlike VCD and SVCD which are both _real_ standards. It is an extension of VCD -- it uses the same technology as VCD, in other words MPEG-1, but uses higher resolution and higher bitrate and therefor can contain appx. 40 minutes of video in one CD. Some DVD players that can't play SVCD, but can play VCD, can play XVCD. But then again, there are LOTS of players that don't support this one.

XSVCD = eXtended SVCD. Same goes for this one as it did for XVCD vs VCD. This one has higher bitrate than SVCD, but then again -- lots of players that can't play XSVCD. Biggest nag is the fact that only appx. 10-15minutes of video can be fitted into one CD with XSVCD format, but the quality is almost 1:1 with DVD (and therefor one should ask, why not to use miniDVD instead...).

"Full" list of players that support each format can be found from here:

SVCD is much better than VHS, but still worse than DVD -- although you don't see much of a difference if you don't have excellent quality TV system to compare with.

And for backing up DVDs to SVCDs, I would recommend checking out this tool:
