hi,
i am trying to fit a dvd which has a size of 6.3gig onto a normal size dvd disc 4.3 gig. i have put the 6.3 gig dvd onto my computer and im using Nero 6.6.8 Nero recode2, i have selected fit to target 4.3 gig, but it only gives me 56.2 percent of quality, how can i get better quality to fit it onto my 4.3 gig dvd? i have trimmed the start and end of title and i have selected just movie only,
this is just a backup for my sole use.
i want the whole movie but i want 100 percent or near quality!
anyone got any ideas!
thanks, agenthank!

Think about what you are asking for a second...

The only way you are going to get to 100% is if your original file is no larger than 4.3 gigs. There are some things that you can do to free up some space and make the quality better, but you won't get anywhere near 100%.

Remove all audio except AC3 5.1
Remove any or all subtitles that you don't need or want.
Backup the main movie only without the menus or special features.

In addition to the above suggestions you can also use the quality controls that Recode provides for you. Enable Advanced Analysis and slow burning.

or, if you still want all the extras, all the menu options, and all the previews and warning screens..... just get a DL disk and make a 1:1 copy!~ no editing involved! but I do movie only!

If you use advanced analysis and slow burning you might not see the difference....it all depends on what you are watching the movie on.

for those DVDs that need a lot of compression a good encoder will do the job better than a transcoder...... that's why I use DVDReubiler Pro with CCE as the encoder. DVDRB is the best quality you can get!

If you want 100 percent just split the movie in two and put it on two disks. much cheaper than a dual layer. And no messing around with all these programs to shrink and encode

I, for one, hate to split movies! I like them all on one disk and I only do movie only. Everyone has their own methods and reasons and preferances..... this is what I like to do. Just a suggestion. Do what you like best and what's good for you.

I agree with IHOE, a blank SL disc is only about 30 cents so give it a try and see how it turns out at 50%.

hi :)
one suggestion, burn your D/L with DVDDecrypter or IMGburn, they handle the layer break a lot better than Nero

Gurnard is correct about using Imgburn for your DL burns, it handles the layer break better than most other programs...here are some guides for burning with Imgburn for both SL and DL burns.

ok, thanks guys!
those guides will be good,
one other thing, how does dual layer work?
does it burn on both sides of the disc or one side?
and what do you mean by layer break?
thanks, agenthank!

It burns on one side of the disc. The one side holds 2 layers of data/vido. Layer break is where the connection of the two layers takes place so that your movie will play uninterupted. Nero 6 can not write these layer breaks properley.

A dual layer disc has two layers. It is all on one side of the disc 2 tracks where 1 would be on a single layer disc. Let me see if i can find an article on discs as it will explain it better than i.

So the first layer of a DL is just like a regular DVD-5, burning from hub to outer ring, then the disc starts burning the second layer from outer edge back to hub. That second layer is where the layer break comes in. It is just transitioning to the other layer.

As loco and others stated, you cant take a 7gig file and put it on a 4.3 gig disc without loosing something. Most of us select movie only when we want to put the least amount of compression on a movie. Sometimes that is all it takes to get 100% or no compression. Yes, you loose the extras that way, but you get the movie with the least amount of compression. DL disc prices are coming down, but they still tend to be much more expensive than a DVD-5, many times more than double what you would pay for a DVD-5. Things like Lord of the Rings series are best for DL discs as the movie is long, and there are lots of extras. A DL will let you do a complete copy with no compression. Most modern burners now support DL burning. For me when shrink or recode will only get 60% or less, i use DVD-Rebuilder Pro with CCE as the encoder, and the copies come out great.
